Court Blocks Maryland's Library E-book Law - Publlishers Weekly

Today Panzer made a stop at the Publishers Weekly site. With hardly any digging at all in the posts there, our inquisitive kitty boy found one about Maryland's Library E-book law.

 

Interesting decision.

According to Andrew Albanese's post, a federal judge has ruled in favor of the Association of American Publishers' (AAP) argument that a new Maryland library e-book law infringes on U.S. copyright law. The judge granted an injunction stopping enforcement of the law. The law was passed by the Maryland General Assembly and scheduled to go into effect on January 1. It was written to help libraries be able to offer e-books to their patrons. The basic premise of the law was, if a publisher offered their e-books to customers in Maryland, the publishers would have to offer/license the e-book to libraries "on reasonable terms." Authors Win $7.8 Million Default Judgment in Global Piracy Lawsuit - Publishers Weekly

As  Panzer was taking his noon nap today he rudely shaken from his kitty bed by clapping and cheering coming from the Catosphere. Hopping into the Panzermobile our brave kitty boy followed the ruckus to the Publishers Weekly site. There he discovered a post about a judgment in a global piracy lawsuit was causing all the joyful noise.

 

Library? No. Piracy site? Yes.

The post by Andrew Albanese says the lawsuit filed by the Authors Guild, Amazon Publishing, PRH, and several authors against the KISS Library for ebook piracy has been decided. The judge decided the KISS Library is an ebook piracy site. KISS Library was ordered to shut down all domain sites. The owners of the site were also ordered to pay $7.8 million.

 

Panzer says, "Piracy is stealing and when you're caught you will pay."

Judge Orders Remedy for Apple in eBook Case - GalleyCat

They have to do what?

Panzer stopped in at GalleyCAT today to read about Apple's punishment in the ebook price fixing case.

Basically, the judge's order says, "Don't do it again and to make sure you don't, hire somebody to teach you how not to do it again." (He's paraphrasing here.)
