Today, as Panzer was tootling around in the Catophere he decided to make a stop at the Publishers Weekly site. There our intrepid traveler found a post about problems publishers are having.

 

Supply chain problems are still here.

The post by Ed Nawotka covers information from a webinar on May 4 by the Ingram Content Group. The webinar discussed the fact several issues are causing problems for publishers right now. These include supply chain problems, cost increases, and port delivery problems. Other contributing factors are labor shortages and paper shortages. Customer buying habits are also changing. Customers are buying and reading more ebooks and audio books.

Panzer says, "They're also looking at print on demand."

Today Panzer made a stop at the USA Today site. There our traveling kitty pilot found a post about the Christmas book shortage of 2021. Panzer has been telling you about the supply chain problems businesses have been experiencing.

Maybe it won't be that bad.

According to the post by Mary Cadden, bookstore owners/CEOs and booksellers aren't worried about paper or labor shortages causing a book shortage this holiday season. Since publishers plan and publish their holiday books months in advance, bookstores only expect minimal inconvenience for their book buyers. A video about supply chain problems is included at the beginning of the post. Also included are several links to other posts and information about publishers and supply chain problems in general.

The great book shortage of 2021, explained - Vox

Today Panzer made a trip to the Vox site. There he found some information about the ongoing supply chain problems and books. Panzer has been telling you for months about these problems.

 

According to the post by Constance Grady, supply chain problems for books can be broken down into four major parts. The first is people are reading more as a hobby and for pleasure now. The second is it's costing more to print books, if the printer can even get the paper and ink to print them. The third is it's costing more to ship the books, if drivers can be found. The fourth is it's costing more for labor, if the employees can be found. Ultimately, it looks like the supply chain problems for books are here to stay until some time in 2022.

There are ways around everything.

 

Panzer says, "Can't find a printed book? Buy ebooks. Electrons are everywhere."

According to the post by Hope Corrigan, publishers are telling consumers and booksellers there will be problems with book printing and book deliveries from now through the end of the year. This is due to the supply chain issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Panzer told you about the supply chain problems yesterday, so this information shouldn't come as a surprise.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... This little kitty thinks you better start buying your Christmas present books now."

Supply Chain Problems for Publishers and Authors - Various

 Back in August Panzer told you about the upcoming supply chain problems Ingram was warning publishers to prepare for in the coming months. 

 

Other sources are now experiencing supply problems as well. Some authors' are reporting bookstores are unable to get their book orders filled by their publishers. Other authors aren't getting their books delivered to their book signings.

It's a mess and getting worse.

These problems are attributable to publishers' printers not being able to get the paper necessary to print the books and/or not being able to get the printed books delivered to the publishers. This is due to paper manufacturing problems and delivery problems caused by the pandemic.

If you plan to publish any books (paperback or hardback) before the end of the end of the year, you should read these posts to help plan your strategy.

According to the post, Ingram Content Group is predicting supply chain problems and cost increases for the publishing industry this holiday season. Ingram is also expecting warehouse and transportation problems. All these problems will cause slower deliveries.

 

Another ruined Christmas?

Panzer says, "This little kitty thinks you need to get your holiday books ready now, so you don't get caught in the Covid-19 storm in December."
