Seattle Worldcon 2025 ChatGPT Controversy Roundup - File 770

Did they think nobody would care?
Today Panzer was shaken from his kitty bed by loud and unhappy noises coming from the Catosphere. Jumping into the Panzermobile, our brave kitty followed all the uproar to the File 770 site. There he discovered the use of ChatGPT by this year's World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) was the cause of all the anger.

According to the information posted by Mike Glyer, a Worldcon committee used ChatGPT to vet perspective panel members without telling them until after the panels' participants were decided. Near the beginning of the post there's a link to the Worldcon statement about ChatGPT's use. As a result at least one author removed his work from award consideration and some people are asking how to get their membership money refunded.

Panzer says, "LLMs, and ChatGPT in particular, are hated by a lot of writers. Remember what happened to NaNoWriMo after their AI statement? Hint: The last nail in the coffin."

Note: This is a very long post. You'll need to decide what to bring to snack on.

Announcing the 2021 Hugo Award Finalists - Tor.com

It's been a while since Panzer has been to the Tor.com site, so he decided to stop in there today. With no digging at all our illustrious kitty found a post listing all the Hugo Award finalists.

Just reading all the names gave me a headache.
According to the post the Hugo Award finalists were announced earlier this month. The Hugo Awards are given annually in the science fiction genre. In order to vote for your choices in the finalists, you must be a member of DisCon III. The post includes a link to signup information. There are twenty different categories ranging from best novel to best illustrator.  Each category has six finalists in it, so we're not going to list them all here.

Panzer says, "I didn't even get nominated.  ... Cat Sigh ... Oh, wait! ... We don't write sf. ... So ... Never mind."

Note: This is a h-u-m-o-n-g-o-u-s list. Bring a thermos of tea, three muffins and a cupcake for today's reading selection.

Announcing the 2020 Hugo Award Finalists - Tor.com

I won't have to travel now.
Panzer hasn't been to the Tor.com site for a while, so he decided to stop in there today. With a little digging the posts, our traveling kitty boy found one about the Hugo Awards. The Hugos are given each year in science fiction genre.

According to the post at Tor.com, the 2020 Hugo Awards, Lodestar Award, Astounding Award and 1945 Retro Hugo Awards finalists have been announced. The awards are to be presented at the 78th World Science Fiction Convention in New Zealand. This year because of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic the convention will be online. The post contains a link to the announcement of the transition to an online convention and the entire list of all the finalists in each division.

Panzer says, "At least the convention isn't cancelled."

Note: This is a humongous post. Bring a quart of tea and a dozen muffins for today's reading selection. You might also want to bring a blanket and a pillow for a nap in the middle of your reading, because there are a lot of divisions and a lot of finalists in each.
