Profits, Sales Up at WH Smith in Fiscal 2024 - Publishers Weekly

I'm not sure what it all means about US readers.

Panzer found this post at the Publishers Weekly site. It's a post about UK bookshops WH Smith.

 

According to the post by Neill Denny, WH Smith's sales are doing so well and profits are increasing so the company plans to open more bookstores in North America. The stores will primarily open in US airports.

 

Panzer says,"Hmm ... Interesting development. UK's WH Smith bookstore chain is coming to join UK company owned Barnes and Noble bookstore chain in the US books sales market."

Amazon Turns $2.7 Billion Loss in 2022 to a Profit of $30 Billion in 2023 - Publishers Weekly

That's a huge profit jump for one year.

Panzer's trip into the Catosphere today took our traveling kitty pilot to the Publishers Weekly site. There with a little digging in the posts he found one about Amazon's company profits.

 

According to Jim Milliot's post, Amazon announced a turnaround for a company loss in 2022 to a major profit in 2023. The company cut expenses by implementing employee layoffs and delivery reorganizations. The company also had a significant increase in sales. The combination of  these lead to the 2023 profit.

Amazon: Over 1,000 Authors Each Earned Over $100 Grand in Royalties in 2018 - The Digital Reader

Where's my $100,000?

Today Panzer made a quick stop at The Digital Reader site. There he found a post about Amazon's indie authors.

According to Nate Hoffelder, Amazon released a report that includes information about indie authors' royalties from book sales through the company. Amazon says in their report that over a thousand authors made over $100,000. There's a link included in the post to download the twelve page PDF report. The author information is included on page 11 of the report.

Panzer says, "It's not necessary to download the report. Just read the post at The Digital Reader site and you'll have all the information you need. Believe this little kitty. Mom downloaded the report and read it to me. Skip it."

Barnes & Noble Shows A Profit

You must have seen it coming.

Panzer stopped in to visit his old friends at Publishers' Weekly today. Our big bad kitty boy found a post there about Barnes and Noble.

According to the post by Jim Milliot, Barnes and Noble's profits were up 14% in the third quarter of their business year. The only down divisions for the company were the Nook and digital content divisions. The Nook showed a loss of 63% and digital content a loss of 29.3%.

Panzer says, "What did you guys expect? You said you were going to try to spin-off or sell the division. I wouldn't buy a Nook if I didn't know who was going to own it."

Amazon Poses Possible New Offer To Hachette Author

Humans. Pfftttt.

Panzer got a late start in his Catosphere search today. But heading out late was worth the trip. The Publishers' Weekly site has an update on the Amazon-Hachette dispute.

Amazon made a "what if" offer to bestselling author Douglas Preston (who started the letter against Amazon). In the offer Amazon said, "what if" they starting carrying and selling Hachette's books again ... and "what if" the royalties from those sales was given to the authors ... and "what if" the money Amazon and Hachette's each earned from those sales was given to a literacy charity ... and "what if" Amazon and Hachette kept negotiating then ... would Douglas Preston and Hachette's other authors refrain from speaking out against Amazon?

Mr. Preston's response was the same as last time, "No."

Panzer says, "Humans. I'll never understand them."
