A look inside the AWS lab where retired hardware gets a second chance - About Amazon

Today, Panzer went to the Amazon news site About Amazon. There he found a post about the company's recycling efforts.

Panzer says, Interesting.
Interesting.
The post by the Amazon Staff begins with a 2+ minutes YouTube video which explains how Amazon recycles computer parts. This is followed by an in-depth explanation of what was covered in the video. The section is broken down into the steps the system parts go through to be reused.

Panzer says, "This little kitty didn't know parts could be fixed and re-used."

Note: Because of the video and the photos illustrating each step, this is a very long post. Bring a cup of tea, a muffin, a brownie and a chocolate chip cookie (biscuit) for today's reading selection.

RIP, Windows 7: Microsoft ending update and security for popular operating system - GeekWire

Panzer was taking his late morning nap when he was rudely shaken from his kitty bed by crying and yelling coming from the Catosphere. Hopping in the Panzermobile and following all the noise took him to the Geek Wire site. There he found a post about Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system.

According to Geek Wire's Nat Levy, Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system is officially dead. The life support was turned off on January 14. Microsoft will no longer provide system updates, security updates or technical support. You are officially no longer a Microsoft customer. But wait ... Microsoft says all we need to do is buy a new computer and the Windows 10 operating system and they'll let you back in the family!
Why do humans put up with this?

Of course, there is an exception in Windows 7's demise. Businesses can pay $25 a year per computer for Windows 7 security updates (but nothing else) for another three years.

Panzer says, "Easy. Nothing to it ... but a big wad of cash. There goes my catnip budget for the rest of the year."

Note: This is a medium length post. Bring a cup of tea for today's reading selection. If you plan to follow all the lengths, bring a quarter of tea and six muffins.

How To Wipe a Computer of All Your Personal Data - Popular Mechanics

Today, when Panzer was cleaning the console between the pilot's seat and the passenger seat, he found a wadded up post. Smoothing it out, our curious kitty boy discovered it was a post from the Popular Mechanics site about how to wipe a computer drive clean.

According to the post by Courtney Linder, doing a factory reset on your computer is probably all the average person needs to do to remove the data from their computer. The post includes instructions for how to do it on either a Mac or a PC. The post also includes instructions for how to destroy the hard drive if you think that's necessary.

Three days until Christmas.
Panzer says, "The post is long, but, if you plan on getting rid of your computer, it's worth reading and doing for your privacy.."

Note: This is a large post. Bring a thermos of cocoa and six muffins for today's reading selection.

Computer Problems So No Post Until Monday

There was no post yesterday (Friday) because Mom's computer crashed and everything went all kittywampus. Now her computer is at the computer hospital where the computer doctors are trying to figure out if it will survive their surgery efforts. While we wait for news, Mom is using her old laptop. We'll be back posting on Monday.
