Hugh Howey on the Lazy Writer Myth

Read and learn.
Panzer was out in the Catosphere searching for some news for you today. Our big busy kitty stopped in at the Book Life site to see what he could find. It took a bit of digging for him to find what he was looking for.

Guess what?

Your wait was worth it.

Panzer boy found a post by Hugh Howey dispelling The Myth of the Lazy Writer. According to Mr. Howey, being a successful writer is hard work. Success doesn't get handed to you. You have to earn it. Whether you're an indie author or a traditionally published author, you have to do the work. You need to write the novel beginning to end. Then do the work to get it published. He says he spent 20 years writing his first novel. So ... it's not easy and it's not fast ... and it's not for the lazy.

Panzer says, "He means, you have to put in the hours and pay your dues before you get your kitty treats."

Hugh Howey On KDP

I need to look into this.
Panzer was out enjoying the sun in the Catosphere today. Our lazy little kitty boy stopped in at Hugh Howey's blog.  He likes to visit there because Mr. Howey always has interesting posts.

This time Mr. Howey is posting about being a "chump" for using Amazon's KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) for his books. Lately, he's been seeing a lot of posts and threads about how little money most indie authors make after publishing their books on KDP. So, he decided to tell the story of why and how he worked up to publishing with KDP. It's an interesting and enlightening read for all writers, not just indies.

Panzer says, "I guess I'm a chump too."

Note: As is always the case with Mr. Howey's posts, bring an e-x-t-r-a l-a-r-g-e cup of tea for your read today.

Self Publishing Predictions for 2015

What did I get into?
Panzer has been searching high and low in the Catosphere today to see into the future. Our kitty fortuneteller wants to know what 2015 holds for indie writers and publishers. So, he did the happy kitty dance when he found a post at the Booklife site by Betty Kelly Sargent on just that subject.

Ms. Sargent interviewed some of the big names in the indie world. Names like Hugh Howey, Joel Friedlander, Thad Mcllroy, and Russell Blake. There are quotes from articles on the subject, too.

What are the big names saying? Hugh Howey says not much will happen this year. Joel Friedlander says indie publishing will grow. Thad Mcllroy talks about mobile computing. Russell Blake addresses subscription services.

Panzer says, "It's all so confusing. I wish I hadn't asked!"

Past NaNoWriMo Participants Give Tips

I'll never catch up on my naps.
Panzer has been busy working on this year's NaNoWriMo novel. My bad boy thought you all might be interested in reading Daniel Leffert's Publishers' Weekly post. Mr. Leffert has interviews with Jason M. Hough, Hugh Howey, Marissa Meyer, Karen Harrington, and Gennifer Albin. All are former NaNoWriMo participants who went on to publish novels.

Panzer says, "34,000 words done. Only 16,000 words left before November 30. Me-OW-OW-OW!"

What Is Amazon's Impact On Publishing?

Back to work.
Panzer is still behind in his daily NaNoWriMo word count. My speedy little black kitty made a short trip to Book Life today.

Panzer found a post about a panel discussion arranged by the New American Foundation about Amazon's impact on publishing. Panel participants were bestselling indie author Hugh Howey, book store owner Sarah McNally, and National Public Radio host Manousch Zomorodi.

Panzer says, "Of course Amazon has an impact on publishing."

Hugh Howey On Saving Barnes and Noble

I looked and I looked. Finally, I found.
Today, Panzer got a late start in the Catosphere.

After searching and searching, my bad boy was able to find a great post for you over at bestselling author Hugh Howey's blog. Panzer enjoys going to Mr. Howey's blog because he always has informative posts for authors and readers.

In this post Mr. Howey is giving us his ideas about Barnes & Noble's slow demise. He brings up points that have lost the company buying customers. These include the loss of places to sit and peruse a selection of books before a buyer makes a choice, the introduction of loyalty cards, and the fact there are no longer author events. Mr. Howey has several more suggestions to help turn around Barnes and Noble.

Panzer says, "At least the company isn't on life support yet."

Bring a large cup of tea because this is a l-o-n-g post.

Amazon-Hachette Contract Dispute Continues

I can't get away from it. It's everywhere!
Panzer just can't get any quiet. Just when he thought he might be able to get a nap, the CATerwauling started again. My bad boy dragged his sleep deprived body into the Catosphere and discovered all the latest over at The Passive Voice blog.

As my poor kitty told you earlier this week bestselling author Douglas Preston was circulating a letter to Amazon. He managed to get 300 authors to sign it.  Now bestselling indie author Hugh Howey is circulating a letter supporting Amazon which has 3,000+ signers.

Panzer says, "Will you guys just sign the contract and get all this over with. I've got to get some sleep!"

Ebook Earnings Report

Panzer was out in the Catosphere following a trail of cheering authors. He found the source of all the excitement at author Hugh Howey's post at Author Earnings.

Hugh spent an enormous amount of time putting together a report that documents authors' earnings from ebooks sales, the number of sales, the percentage of indie sales compared to traditional sales and much more.

If you doubt whether or not you should get into indie publishing, you need to read this report. You'll see that indie publishing is a viable way to publish and market your ebook. The report also demonstrates you can make money selling your ebook. Panzer wants you to know this is a very long report and graphs and numbers heavy.

Hugh Howey

Traditional? What's that?
Panzer found an interview by Porter Anderson at Publishing Perspectives with Hugh Howey.

Yes, that would be Hugh Howey of indie published Wool fame.  If you don't know who Hugh Howey is, where have you been? He is the new Amanda Hocking of indie publishing.

In the interview Howey discusses self publishing versus traditional publishing. I think you'll find it's an interesting interview.

Be warned. It's very, very long. So make a huge cup of tea before you tootle over to Hugh Howey on self-publishing vs. traditional publishing

How Self-Pubing made Hugh Howey $100,000 per Month

$100,000 a month?!?!?
Panzer found this podcast interview at Wired by Geeks Guide To The Galaxy with best selling author Hugh Howey. Hugh made $100,000 per month selling his book Wool at Amazon.

Panzer had me read Wool to him a few weeks ago when he first started hearing mewlings about it in the Catosphere. While it's very dark view of the future takes some getting used to, the novel itself is well plotted and written and my bad boy liked it.

This is more than a one cup of tea podcast! At nearly two hours long get a whole pot of tea made before you sit down to listen to it.
