Bad Contract Alert: Stary (aka Dreame) - Writer Beware

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Writer Beware site. With just a little digging he found a post about the Dreame app (and others like it).

 

Who can write that much that fast?

According to Victoria Strauss' post, Stary's app Dreame allows readers to read serialized stories. Authors sign contracts which bind them to produce huge amounts of written work over a short period of time for these serials. The post includes several links one of which is to the contract she discusses.

 

Panzer says, "Always read a contract before you sign it."

All About Amazon Vella

 

Let's look into this.

For the last week all Panzer has been hearing in the Catosphere is about Amazon's Vella. To help you learn about it our inquisitive kitty began a search of his own to gather information.

 

Panzer found opinions and information in a post on a blog, in a YouTube video and on the Amazon site. Vella is Amazon's newest publishing endeavor. On it you can read serialized stories and novels. In that way it's similar to Wattpad. The reader does, however, pay for each installment after the first. That's how Amazon and authors get paid.

 

Panzer says, "Here's some of the interesting stuff I found out there."

Serial Box serial e-publisher snags $1.65 million investment - TeleRead

Panzer's trip into the Catosphere today took him to the TeleRead site. There with just a little digging our intrepid kitty traveler found a post about Serial Box.

Where's my $1.99 a week?

According to Chris Meadows, Serial Box just got a $1.65 million investment from Book Rocker Media. No one seems to know exactly what Serial Box will do with the money. In Serial Box's service a reader pays $1.99 per week for Serial Box's post of one episode in a story. The stories are from 13 to 18 episodes long. There are links included in the post to other posts about Serial Box and the $1.65 million investment.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... An episode a week? I do one Panzerism a week. I'm willing to do an audio version too."

Can Serialized Fiction Convert Binge Watchers Into Binge Readers? - NPR

Humans will buy anything.

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he found an interesting post about serialized fiction at the NPR site.

The post by Lynn Neary is about a new publishing service called Serial Box. The service doesn't publish books, they publish "episodes" of books for subscribers. The company does not want the "episodes" called chapters. According to the post, the book is plotted out and then broken into sections. The sections are the "episodes." The post states the "episodes" are published over 10 to 16 weeks depending on the story's length.

Panzer says, "You humans have to read the Comments Section at the end to really understand the post."

Four Markets for Serial Fiction

Looking for markets? Or just a good read?

Panzer was out looking for markets for short stories today. He found a post at Indie Reader  by JH Mae that has markets for not only short stories, but serial fiction too.

What is serial fiction you ask?

Well, so did Panzer.

According to the Indie Reader post, it's not exactly like the old serial movies your great-grandmother used to watch, but it is similar in some ways. Today's serial fiction can be a novel released chapter by chapter or a collection of short stories released story by story or even a novella.

Ms. Mae describes four markets for serial fiction, including DailyLit, Eat Your Serial, Jukepop, and Tuesday Serial.

If you're a writer, it doesn't look like these are paying markets; but it could be a way to get your work out to readers and get a following.

Or ... if you're a reader, these could be places to enjoy serial fiction.
