Penguin Random House Extends Temporary E-book, Digital Audio Terms for Libraries - Publishers Weekly

Today as Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere the Panzermobile was suddenly buffeted by clapping outside. Following all the noise took our brave kitty boy to the Publishers Weekly site. There with a little digging in the posts, he found one about Penguin Random House and libraries.

According to Andrew Albanese's post, Penguin Random House (PRH) has notified libraries that because of the continued Covid-19 pandemic the company will be extending the temporary terms of the ebook and digital audio purchasing option begun in March. The option will now be available until December 31. PRH is extending it's temporary purchasing option of the 12 month term for ebooks and audio books, instead of the usual 24 month purchasing option. The cost has also been lowered to 50 percent of the 24 month purchase terms. The post includes links to other sites explaining the temporary license purchase option, PRH's announcement about giving libraries and educators the ability to read PRH books aloud online, and other information.
To really help, give the book to them free.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... With how bad library budgets are right now, it's a smart move on PRH's part to give libraries a break on costs."

Note: This is a long-medium length post. Bring a cup of tea, one muffin and one brownie for today's reading selection. If you plan to follow the links in the post, bring an extra cup of tea and an extra brownie.

Congress Looking into Anticompetitive Behavior in the Digital Library Market - Publishers Weekly

Today, Panzer made a trip to the Publishers Weekly site. There our speedy kitty boy found a post about the American Library Association and publisher Macmillan's embargo. Panzer has been telling you about Macmillan's two month embargo on new ebooks sales to libraries since it was announced.

Libraries can get my ebooks.
According to Andrew Albanese, the embargo has taken an unexpected turn. The American Library Association (ALA) has taken their digital book distribution problem with publisher Macmillan to the United States Congress. In a letter to an antitrust subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, the ALA explained the detrimental effects to the library systems caused by Macmillan's actions. The ALA also says Amazon Publishing refuses to sell ebooks to libraries. There are several links to other posts about the ALA's ongoing dispute with Macmillan and with Amazon included in the post.

Panzer says, "This little kitty didn't know libraries were fighting with Amazon too."

Note: This is a huge post. Bring a thermos of tea and half a dozen muffins for today's reading selection. If you plan to follow all the links in the post, bring a gallon of tea and three dozen muffins, a sleeping bag for a nap, and a camp stove to cook your dinner on.

Ultraviolet to close down ... but it need not take your movies with it - TeleRead

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he decided it was time to make a quick visit to the TeleRead site. With a little digging around in the posts our inquisitive kitty found one about Ultraviolet.

No time to waste. I have to do it now.
According to Chris Meadows, the Ultraviolet site is shutting down. Ultraviolet is the site where if you bought a movie on a DVD/disc you also got the digital copy . Since the site is shutting down, you can save your digital movies from going to the movie cemetery by linking your account to one of five other services/sites. The five services/sites and other options are all listed in the post.

Panzer says, "Vudu is one of the sites listed and Mom has an account there, so I better get those accounts linked."

Note: This is a h-u-m-o-n-g-o-u-s post. Bring a thermos of tea and a dozen muffins for today's reading selection.
