Do they accept books by Felines?

Today at the Publishing Perspectives site, Panzer learned the Booker Prize for Fiction shortlist has been announced.

 

 According to Porter Anderson's post, the writers on the shortlist are from the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, and Canada. The post includes the name and a photo of each of the six writers on the shortlist.

Panzer says, "The winner will be announced on November 26.

Where Should I Buy My ISBNs? - Indies Unlimited

Today, Panzer decided to make a quick stop at the Indies Unlimited site. With a little digging in the posts, our inquisitive kitty found one about buying and owning ISBNs for your books, ebooks and audio books.

Now where is that ISBN hiding?

According to Melinda Clayton, where you buy your ISBNs (International Standard Book Number) is extremely important. Your book's ISBN identifies it in the Books in Print database. This is how libraries and bookstores can find your book. Bowker is the official seller of ISBNs in the United States. If you buy your book's ISBN directly from Bowker, you are listed in Books in Print as the publisher of your book.  If you get your book's ISBN from Amazon, then Amazon bought that ISBN from Bowker and Amazon is listed as the publisher of your book. There's also an illegal side to not buying your ISBN from Bowker (or Amazon) too. Turns out there are scammers online who advertise they sell ISBNs at discounted prices and the ISBNs are either not delivered or fake made-up numbers.The post includes a link to the Bowker site and one for authors outside the United States.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... You do need to worry about who owns that ISBN, because some bookstores won't carry books with ISBNs showing Amazon as your publisher."

Coalition Opposes Imposition of Paper Tariffs - Publishers Weekly

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was buffeted by yelling and shouting. Following all the noise took our brave kitty boy to the  Publishers Weekly site. With a little digging he discovered the hullabaloo was caused by the threat of the United States placing a tariff on Canadian uncoated groundwood.

According to the post by Jim Milliot, the U.S. company North Pacific Paper Company (NORPAC) filed a complaint that the Canadian government is "dumping" uncoated groundwood at a reduced price in the U.S. market. The wood is used in the U.S. to make paper for use by book, newspaper and directory publishers. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has already announced in January they are recommending a duty (tariff) of between 4.4 percent and 9.9 percent be placed on the Canadian wood. A coalition of publishers is meeting with the U.S. Department of Commerce in February to present their opposition to the tariff. The Department of Commerce will make their decision available in March.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... This little kitty thinks, if the tariff goes into effect, the cost of books, newspapers and directories will have to go up. The publishers are already struggling to stay alive. Some of those publications will disappear."

NAFTA's cultural exception top priority for Canada heading into negotiations - Quill & Quire

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Quill and Quire site. There our inquisitive kitty found a post about Canada's plans for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiation with the United States and Mexico.

According to Sue Carter's post, renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, the United States and Mexico will begin on August 16, 2017 in Washington, D.C. Among other issues Canada will be addressing their cultural exemption in the agreement. As explained in the post, the cultural exemption protects Canada's publishing and broadcasting industries. The Canadian publishing industry earns $53 million from sales to the U.S. which the industry would like to protect. Since there is no trade deficit with the U.S. concerning books, it's believed the cultural exemption will be allowed to remain unchanged. There's more information about Canada's plans for the renegotiation and links included in the post.

NAFTA? That's a funny words.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... This little kitty didn't know there was a cultural exemption in NAFTA for Canadian books."
