Library Orgs Urge Big Five to Address Digital Pricing - Publishers Daily

Publishers are in it for the money.

Today, Panzer's first stop in the Catosphere was at the Publishers Daily site. There with just a little digging in the posts our inquisitive kitty boy found one about library organizations and the big five publishers.

 

Nathalie op de Beeck's post quotes extensively from the representatives of library groups in the U.S. and Canada about the high costs of licensing digital products. The library organizations would like to meet with publishing representatives to discus the pricing at sustainable levels for libraries.

 

Panzer says, "It's important to have ebooks and audiobooks available in libraries for patrons to read and listen to."

Hilary Weston Writers Trust Prize for Nonfiction - Writers' Trust of Canada

Wattpad's Disruption in Turkiye: 'No Explanation' - Publishing Perspectives

Canada Calls for AI Input With Copyright Needs Still Unmet - Publishing Perspectives

Today Panzer found a post about another country gathering information about AI and copyright issues.

 

No it can't think and create new stories.

According to the post by Porter Anderson, Canada's government is collecting input on AI and copyright and their impact on artists, writers and publishers. One issue already brought up addresses the fact humans as the creators of new ideas and material should be granted copyright protection; but, since AI cannot create new ideas and material. it should not be granted copyrights. Links to other information about the subjects in the post are included.

 

Panzer says, "Let's hope deciding what to do about AI and copyright doesn't take as long as fixing the Copyright Modernization Act is taking."

In England: The Booker Prize's Four Nation Shortlist - Publishing Perspectives

Today at the Publishing Perspectives site, Panzer learned the Booker Prize for Fiction shortlist has been announced.

 

 According to Porter Anderson's post, the writers on the shortlist are from the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, and Canada. The post includes the name and a photo of each of the six writers on the shortlist.

Today Panzer went to the Publishing Perspectives site. There our busy traveling pilot kitty found a post about Wattpad.

It will be interesting.

According to Porter Anderson's post, Ashleigh Gardner is leaving her position at Wattpad. The post details her impact on Wattpad over the past decade. Also included is how she helped Wattpad and Wattpad authors grow during that same time period.

Spotify Launches Audiobook Sales in Canada - Publishers Weekly

Sorry I missed it when it first posted.

Today, Panzer made a quick stop at the Publishers Weekly site. There with a little digging in the posts, our illustrious kitty boy found one about Spotify.

 

According to Ed Nawotka's post, Spotify is now selling audiobooks in Canada. Spotify has 350,000 audiobooks available in English and French there.

 

Panzer says, "Hmm ... This little kitty wonders if they need a kitty translator."

Canada's Thomas Allen & Son to Close ... Publishers Weekly

I didn't expect that.

Panzer was shaken from his kitty bed by crying coming from the Catosphere. Jumping into the Panzermobile, he followed all the angst to the Publishers Weekly site. There he found a post about the closure of Canada's Thomas Allen and Son.

According to the post by Ed Nawotka, Thomas Allen and Son will close in March 2023. The Canadian company is a publisher and distributor in Canada for U.S. and U.K publishers.

Sisters in Crime Canada West Author Showcase

 Today, when Panzer was cleaning the inside of the Panzermobile, he discovered something under the passenger floor mat. Pulling it out, our fastidious kitty found it was a post about the Sisters in Crime West Canada group.

According to the post, the group will hold an Author Showcase event online on November 4th at 6 pm Pacific Time. Participating authors will be Karen Abrahamson, Cathy Ace, Marcelle Dube, Joanna VanderViugt, P.D. Workman, and Susan Wright. Each author will have an opportunity to talk about their writing and read some of their work. The authors' bios are at the registration site. The event is free and online via Zoom. After you register you'll get an email with the Zoom link.

Free is always good.

Panzer says, "This sounds like it will be fun."

KDP adding a Transparency code to some barcodes - News Release - KDP Community

Today Panzer found a new announcement at the KDP Community site.

 

Makes it easier for authors.

According to the news release KDP will be beginning adding what the company calls Transparency Codes to the back of some of the books they publish in the U.S. and Canada. The announcement says the Transparency Code is similar to a QR Code. 

 

Panzer says, "With the new code the reader can find out everything about the author."

Canada's Access Copyright Foundation Announces Grants - Publishing Perspectives

Today, when Panzer was sweeping the floor mats in the Panzermobile, he found something wedged under the pilot's seat. Pulling it out, our fastidious kitty boy discovered it was a Publishing Perspectives post about the Access Copyright Foundation.

 

I want to keep my stuff clean.

According to the post by Porter Anderson, Canada's Access Copyright Foundation (ACF) announced the 2021 Professional Development Grant awards earlier this month. The post says $50,000 (Canadian dollars) were awarded. A list of the recipients is included in the post. The post also contains links to other information about the ACF and future application deadlines for other grants.

 

Panzer says, "Following the post about the ACF grants is one about Canada's Covid-19 cases and opening the Canada-US border."

Legible Launches Browser-Based Reading and Publishing Platform - Publishers Weekly

 Panzer was rudely woken up this morning by clapping and cheering coming from the Catosphere. Dragging his poor, tired, little, kitty body into the Panzermobile, he headed into the Catosphere. Following all the hullabaloo took him to the Publishers Weekly site. There he found a post about the new Legible reading and publishing platform.

According to the post by Ed Nawotka, Legible.com has launched their new browser-based platform in beta mode in the U.S. and Canada. Browser-based means you can read their books on your cellphone, tablet or computer. Currently, they have books uploaded by some publishers, books in the public domain, and books uploaded by authors. Legible will be offering a subscription service, a sponsorship program and a publishing program. The subscription service will offer books for reading for a monthly fee. The sponsorship program will give schools and businesses the opportunity to pay a fee and allow multiple people to read the same material for a set amount of time. The publishing program will let authors upload their own books to the platform. There's a link to the publishing platform included in the post. If you fill out the form to get information about the publishing program, you can choose to visit the site and look at the books there.

Interview: CEO Allen Lau on Wattpad's $600 Million Merger with Korea's Naver - Publishing Perspectives

 Today Panzer made another stop at the Publishing Perspectives site. Yesterday the site had a post about Canada's Wattpad merger with South Korea's Naver. Today the site has an interview with Wattpad CEO Allen Lau about the reason's for the merger.

Maybe a cat comic? I'd read it.

According to Porter Anderson's post, Wattpad CEO Allen Lau is elated about the merger with Naver. The merger will form a combined user base of 160 million. Naver has 72 million users and Wattpad has 90 million users. The post includes some interesting information about the two company's channels/platforms and Wattpad's expansion into comics with Naver's Webtoons.

Panzer says, "This sounds like it will work out fine as long as Wattpad gets to stay a separate company in Canada and doesn't get lost in Naver's future plans."

Canada's Wattpad Announces It's Being Acquired by South Korea's Naver - Publishing Perspectives

 Panzer had hardly entered the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was violently shaken by yelling and screaming coming from outside. Following all the chaos took our brave kitty boy to the Publishing Perspectives site. With no digging at all he found a post about the acquisition of Wattpad was what was causing all the noise.

Surprised me.

According to Porter Anderson's post, Wattpad's board announced the company is being acquired by the South Korean company Naver. Wattpad's acquisition is priced at US$600 million in cash and stock. Wattpad will stay in Canada. In addition to the platform and services, Wattpad Studios division and Wattpad Books will join Naver's Webtoon. The post contains much more information about both and the acquisition.

The Netherlands' NL Film Is Developing a Muslim Romance With Wattpad - Publishing Perspectives

Today Panzer decided to make a stop at the Publishing Perspectives site. With a little digging in the posts our inquisitive kitty found one about Wattpad Studios.

 

According to the post by Porter Anderson, Wattpad Studios and NL Film have entered into a new production agreement. Aron Levitz of Wattpad Studios in Toronto, Canada, and Kaja Wolffers of NL Film in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, will work with Samya Hafsaoui for the film production of her novel. Samya Hafsaoui's Dutch Wattpad novel '36 Questions (and lots of coffee)' is translated as a serial each week on the English-speaking Wattpad. Included in the post are links to previous posts about Wattpad and NL Film and a link to Samya Hafsaoui's Wattpad site.

Announcing a New 'Green Book' Consortium: Canada, USA, UK - Publishing Perspectives

Panzer's evening nap was interrupted by clapping and cheering coming from the Catosphere. Hopping into the Panzermobile, our intrepid kitty pilot followed all the joyful noise to the Publishing Perspectives site. There he discovered a post about the new Green Book consortium.

 

According to Porter Anderson's post, a group comprised of Canadian, U.K. and U.S.A. supply chain organizations for the book publishing industry has formed the International Green Book Supply Chain. The group was formed in part to "make significant changes to reduce its overall environmental impact on the planet." The post includes a list of possible issues the group will address. The post also includes a section of interviews and statements from each country's representative of the member group.

Wattpad's Verticalization: Now Making Its Own International Adaptions - Publishing Perspectives

Today, Panzer decided to make a stop at the Publishing Perspectives site and boy is he glad he did. There he found a post about Canada's Wattpad's newest plans for expansion.

It makes sense for them to do it.

Porter Anderson's post concerns Wattpad's announcement today about the company's plans for its international adaptions. The post is divided into three sections. The first section describes the company's new plans to adapt content from the platform to produce media ready projects, instead of outsourcing the adaptions. The second section concentrates on quotes from Wattpad Studio's Aron Levitz's views on the company's expansion into the development of Wattpad content into film projects. The third section is a description of the first two projects Wattpad intends to adapt: What Happened That Night and The Hound. There are several links included in the post to other information about Wattpad.
