CrimeFest - The International Crime Fiction Convention - Awards Shortlist

The convention is in the UK.

Panzer stopped in at the CrimeFest site and found the announcement of the nominees for this year's awards.

 

The winner in each of the seven categories will be announced on May 17.

International Dayton Peace Prize Shortlists - Publishing Perspectives

I haven't seen any advertising for the contest.

Panzer's travels in the Catosphere today took him to the Publishing Perspectives site. There our adventuresome kitty found a post about an international writing contest.

 

According to Porter Anderson's post, almost no one has heard about this contest and those who do don't know what it's about. So, he does a deep dive into it and explains the contest's origin and this year's shortlists of nominees for the prizes.

 

Panzer says, "This little kitty has never heard of it either, but he has heard of some of the books on the shortlists."

Book Depository Is Closing - Book Depository

Part of Amazon's cost cutting plan.

Today Panzer learned Amazon is closing international book retailer Book Depository.

According to the notice at the Book Depository site, they will close on April 26. 

Panzer says, "The Q&A at the site answers questions about both current and past book orders and the closing."

Publishing Scotland Opens Translation Fund for International Publishers - Publishing Perspectives

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he decided to stop in at the Publishing Perspective site. There with a little digging in the posts our intrepid kitty boy found one about grants for international publishers translating Scottish novels.

 

According to Porter Anderson's post, Publishing Scotland is offering grant funding for the translation of Scottish authors' novels. The funding is open to publishers located outside the U.K. Links to previous grant winners and the application form are included in the post.

 

Translation. An author's dream.

Panzer says, "This is an excellent opportunity for Scottish authors to reach an international audience."

Amazon Publishing Opens #ReadTheWorld 2022 - Publishing Perspectives

Today, Panzer found an interesting post about Amazon Publishing at the Publishing Perspectives site. 

 

Free books.

According to Porter Anderson's post, you can download one free copy of each of Amazon's World Book Day ten international books. The post contains a download link for each of the ten books. Each book is from a different country. There are also links to other information about #ReadTheWorld.

Panzer says, "The free download offer is only good until April 27."

National Novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) started November 1. While we're really late letting you know about it, Mom's excuse is she's been working on a new book and forgot to tell you.

 

Even though it's late in the month, you can still register for NaNoWriMo. Although it's billed as National Novel Writing Month, it's really (Inter)National Novel Writing Month because anyone can join the craziness.

Mom is crazy.

Your NaNoWriMo assignment is to write a 50,000 word first draft of your novel and finish on November 30. You can upload your work and get the number of words verified.

Panzer says, "It doesn't have to be perfect."

Note: A 50,000 word novel in thirty days. That's 1.613 words per day.

Bertelsmann and Penguin Random House: Climate Neutrality by 2030 - Publishing Perspectives

Today as Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere, our adventuresome kitty decided to make a stop at the Publishing Perspectives site. There he found an interesting post. While not exactly about publishing, it is about the international publishing/media giant Bertelsmann.

Let's leave something good for our kittens.

According to the post by Publishing Perspectives Editor in Chief Porter Anderson, on Monday Thomas Rabe, chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann, announced the company will be climate-neutral by 2030. On Tuesday Markus Dohle, global CEO of Penguin Random House (PRH), announced to employees that PRH has already switched 98 percent of the company's paper purchases to certified (sustainable forests) mills. PRH will also be using 100 percent green energy by 2022. Penguin Random House is part of Bertelsmann. The post includes information on exactly how Bertelsmann plans to reach its goal by 2030. There's also a short video at the end of the post.

Panzer says, "This little kitty wonders when other publishers will follow Bertelsmann lead?"

Publishing Scotland's New Author International Travel Fund Hits the Road - Publishing Perspectives

Today, Panzer made a stop at the Publishing Perspectives site. With no digging at all our speedy little kitty boy found a post about Scottish Books International's new Author International Travel Fund.

According to Porter Anderson's post at Publishing Perspectives, one year old Scottish Books International has begun dispensing grants from the Author International Travel Fund. The fund gives Scottish authors grants to travel  internationally to festivals and events. This year 18 authors received grants to travel and promote their work. All the grant recipients, the amounts of the grants, and the festivals/events they attended are included in the post.

I guess I could just walk across a border.

Panzer says, "This little kitty wishes he could get a grant to travel internationally to promote his work. ... Oh. Wait. ... I hate flying. So no travel by airplane. ... I hate water. So no travel by ship. ... And ... I'm a cat. So I can't get a passport. ... So ... No international traveling for me."

Where Should I Buy My ISBNs? - Indies Unlimited

Today, Panzer decided to make a quick stop at the Indies Unlimited site. With a little digging in the posts, our inquisitive kitty found one about buying and owning ISBNs for your books, ebooks and audio books.

Now where is that ISBN hiding?

According to Melinda Clayton, where you buy your ISBNs (International Standard Book Number) is extremely important. Your book's ISBN identifies it in the Books in Print database. This is how libraries and bookstores can find your book. Bowker is the official seller of ISBNs in the United States. If you buy your book's ISBN directly from Bowker, you are listed in Books in Print as the publisher of your book.  If you get your book's ISBN from Amazon, then Amazon bought that ISBN from Bowker and Amazon is listed as the publisher of your book. There's also an illegal side to not buying your ISBN from Bowker (or Amazon) too. Turns out there are scammers online who advertise they sell ISBNs at discounted prices and the ISBNs are either not delivered or fake made-up numbers.The post includes a link to the Bowker site and one for authors outside the United States.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... You do need to worry about who owns that ISBN, because some bookstores won't carry books with ISBNs showing Amazon as your publisher."

Ebook Revenues Rising Abroad For American Publishers

Interested in (e)book sales outside the U.S. for American publishers? Panzer found some interesting information at the Digital Book World site. According to figures from the Association of American Publishers international ebook sales are up 63%. Wow!
