New column on free and low-cost books: Robert's Roundup of Ebook Deals - TeleRead

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he decided to stop in at the TeleRead site. With just a little digging around our inquisitive kitty found a post about a new place to find links to free or low-cost cost ebooks.

According to Robert Nagle, he's started a new column where he locates free and low-cost ebooks. There seems to be a wide range of fiction and nonfiction ebooks included in his lists. He does admit in the preface that he hasn't read the books on his lists. The post begins with links to his first three columns. There's a lot of good information in the post after the links, so you might want to finish reading the post before you go to the columns.

Christmas is only five days away.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... Free ebooks just in time for Christmas."

Instafreebie to Rebrand as Prolific Works - The Digital Reader

Panzer's trip into the Catosphere today took him to The Digital Reader site. With a little digging around there our inquisitive kitty found a post about Instafreebie.

Humans have to change stuff all the time.

According to site owner Nate Hoffelder, Instafreebie announced a few days ago the company was setting up accounts for users to "claim." Instafreebie allows users to download free ebooks. With the new accounts users would be able to see all the ebooks they've downloaded from Instafreebie. The company announced this week it's making a name change. The new name will be Prolific Works. According to the same announcement the company is "pivoting" in a new direction. Nothing about the new direction in the announcement, because that is being withheld until a webinar next week. The Digital Reader post quotes extensively from the Instafreebie announcement.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... This little kitty wonders what the "pivot" is going to be. There must some reason it's such a big secret."

In Celebration of World Book Day, AmazonCrossing Aims to Connect One Million Readers with Kindle Books in Translation - Press Release

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard clapping and cheering. Following all the hullabaloo took our brave kitty boy pilot to the Amazon press room. With no digging at all he discovered a post about AmazonCrossing.

According to the press release, Amazon's book translation arm AmazonCrossing is celebrating World Book Day. Beginning April 17 and ending April 24, Amazon is making nine translated ebooks available free to U.S. residents. There is one ebook each from Korea, Greece, Sweden, Japan, Turkey, Russia, Indonesia, Spain and Chile. The genres include literary fiction, historical, mystery, memoir, and psychological thriller. The press release includes a link to a site where all nine ebooks are available to download. After the information about the World Book Day ebooks, there's the usual information about Amazon.

I didn't know they could do that.

Panzer says, "The download site includes a pages read counter. This little kitty finds it a little scary Amazon can track how many pages you're reading in your book."

Smashwords' Summer Free and Discounted Ebooks Promotion

Every summer Smashwords has a ebooks promotion in July.  Ebooks in the promotion can be free, discounted 75 percent, 50 percent, or 25 percent. Authors can put any or all of their ebooks into the promotion. The prices are only good with the coupon code and at Smashwords.

I don't think you need an account to get free ebooks in the promotion, but, if they're discounted ebooks, you have to have an account to pay for them.

Why Amazon is deleting book reviews: understanding Amazon's new review policy and how to get bck deleted reviews - CreativINDIE

Panzer took a short trip into the Catosphere today. He has been hearing a lot about Amazon's new "product" review policy. That's the one he told you about earlier this week that bans free products for reviews. Our traveling kitty pilot stopped in at the CreativINDIE site today to check out Derek Murphy's new post about Amazon's policy

Just do it.

According to Derek Murphy's post, although Amazon denied the policy would apply to books, some authors have seen their ebook/book reviews deleted because of the policy. It appears because the reviewers were told to use the wording, they were given a "free book in exchange for a review" those reviews were deleted. Amazon determined the reviewers were given an incentive for the review. The post includes an example of wording which should pass the new Amazon review policy test, as well as a suggestion of how to get the deleted reviews back.

Panzer says, "It's Amazon's house, so you have to play by their house rules ... Even when the house rules change."

The Real Story: Amazon Bans Free Review Samples Which Compete With Its Amazon Vine Program - The Digital Reader

No free ebooks for reviews?

According to The Digital Reader site editor Nate Hoffelder's post, Amazon's new review rules may not be what they seem. In case you missed the announcement, Amazon is no longer allowing businesses to give away free products for reviews. Amazon counts this as giving the free product as an "incentive" for reviews and it is now banned. However, Mr. Hoffelder speculates that Amazon may be protecting their own Vine Program review service. In the post there is a link to the Amazon announcement. You'll also want to read the Comments section for additional information pertinent to authors and publishers.

Panzer says, "Well-traveled kitties like me learn all kinds of things. Like: To side-step Amazon's new rules authors and publishers are changing the wording of their agreements with readers they give free copies of their ebooks/books to for reviews. Now 'a review is appreciated, but not required for the free ebook/book'."

Goodreads Debuts Kindle E-book Giveaways - PW (Publishers' Weekly)

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard the sound of tentative clapping. Following the noise took him to the Publishers' Weekly site. There our brave kitty found a post about Amazon's Goodreads.

According to the post by Calvin Reid, Goodreads is adding Kindle ebook giveaways to the site. Until now authors and publishers could only hold giveaways for print books. As soon as testing is finished, any author or publisher who sells ebooks at the Amazon Kindle Store will be able to sign up for a giveaway. While the print book giveaways have always been free (and will remain so), the ebook giveaways will have a $119 fee. Goodreads will handle most of the details associated with the ebook giveaway including picking the winners. There is a 100 ebook limit on the giveaway, although no mention is made if this is a one time limit or if you could do multiple 100 ebook giveaways.

What took you so long?

Panzer took a short trip into the Catosphere today. Our busy kitty boy stopped in at the Smashwords blog. After a little digging around he found an interesting post by Smashwords founder Mark Coker for you.

According to Mr. Coker, 250 Smashwords crime fiction authors' books will be available on a thumb drive in each of the "goodies bags" at Bouchercon. Bouchercon is the annual mystery fiction convention for writers and fans.

Panzer says, "No, I'm not included ... but ... I have my own big news for you tomorrow."

My bad boy found FREE ebooks over at David Cranmer's blog! Cranmer has two of his short story collections FREE for the next few days. They are the mystery short story collection The Education of a Pulp Writer by David Cranmer and the western short story collection Adventures of Cash Laramie and Gideon Miles by Edward A. Grainger (his pen name). Be sure to read the descriptions at Amazon. These may not be for everyone.

Cranmer doesn't specify how long he's going to have the books FREE so, if you want one or both, you should hurry over now and download them.

Copyrighted Books Go Online For Free In Norway

135,000 books? All FREE?

Panzer was over at The Telegraph and read an interesting article by Martin Chilton.

According to Mr. Chilton the National Library of Norway is going to make 135,000 digital books available online FREE. These are copyright protected books and the authors will be paid for the books. The authors include, Stephen King, Jo Nesbo and Ken Follett among others.
