Barnes & Noble Buys Denver'sTattered Cover Bookstores for $1.83 Million - Publishers Weekly

I got a headache just reading it.

Today at the Publishers Weekly site Panzer found news that Barnes and Noble has purchased the Tattered Cover bookstore chain. He told you a few days ago this was rumored to be happening.

 

According to the post by Ed Nawotka and Jim Milliot, through a rabbit warren of companies Barnes and Noble will be paying $1.83 Million for the four bookstore chain. Most of the current employees will be kept on.

Amazon Launches Massive Six-Day Book Sale - Publishers Weekly

Interesting sale.

Today, Panzer made a stop at the Publishers Weekly site. There he found a post about an Amazon book sale.

According to the post by Sophia Stewart, Amazon is having a book sale May 15 to the 20. The sale will include adult and children's books. It will be open to everyone. The post includes a link to the Amazon site.

 

 Panzer says, "This little kitty didn't know about the sale, so his books must not be included."

KKR Wins S&S for $1.62 Billion - Publishers Weekly

Today, Panzer was shaken from his noon nap in his kitty bed by the sound of clapping coming from the Catosphere. Hopping in the Panzermobile, he followed all the noise to the Publishers Weekly site. There he discovered Simon and Schuster has finally been sold. Panzer told you last year and this year about the on-going court lawsuit to stop the sale of Simon and Schuster to Penguin Random House.That ended earlier this year in a no sale court decision.

 

Now back to important stuff.

According to the post by Publishers Weekly's Jim Milliot and Andrew Albanese, Simon and Schuster has been bought by KKR. KKR is not a publisher, but instead a private investment firm. The firm does say Simon and Schuster will continue as a publisher. The post includes information about plans for the publisher's and employees' futures.

Draft2Digital Acquires Smashwords - Smashwords Blog

Good or Bad? Not sure yet.

When Panzer checked his email this morning he found one from Smashwords.

 
According to the email, Smashwords is being acquired by Draft2Digital. Following the link in the email, Panzer read all the available information about the sale. The sale will be complete on March 1. The Smashwords name/brand will no longer be used. Although the link included in the post isn't clickable, it says there will be an online Q and A tomorrow about the acquisition.

Germany's Bertelsmann To Buy Simon & Schuster for US$2.175 Billion - Publishing Perspectives

Today Panzer decided to make a stop at the Publishing Perspectives site. With no digging at all our speedy kitty found a post about Simon and Schuster and Bertelsmann.

According to the post by Porter Anderson, it was announced today that Penguin Random House (PRH) will buy Simon and Schuster for $2.175 Billion. PRH is actually owned by Bertelsmann, a German company. Writers groups immediately asked for regulatory review of the sale. In the US the Authors Guild expressed its opposition to the sale on the grounds the merger would unfairly impact authors with less markets for their work. In Canada the Association of Canadian Publishers asked for a review of the sale on the grounds of "whether the sale violates the Competition Act ...". At the end of the post there are links to other information about the various publishing companies.

Who's getting too big now?

Panzer says, "Hmm ... People complain about Amazon getting too big? What about Bertelsmann buying up traditional publishers? Two now. Who's next?"

Nigel Roby Sells the UK's 'The Bookseller' to Stage Media Company - Publishing Perspectives

Mr. Roby really loved The Bookseller..

Today, Panzer made a quick trip to the Publishing Perspectives site. With a little digging in the posts, our speedy kitty found one about the sale of the UK's The Bookseller.

According to the post by Porter Anderson, Nigel Roby has sold  The Bookseller  to Stage Media Company for an undisclosed amount. Under Nigel Roby's ten year ownership The Bookseller staged annual conferences and two book prize awards. All the company's operations and employees will be moved to the Stage Media Company's offices.

Panzer says, "This little kitty hopes the new owner doesn't make too many changes to The Bookseller."

Pearson Sells Last 25% of PRH to Bertelsmann - Publishers Weekly

Four days until Christmas. Then watch out.

Today as Panzer was trying to see what was under the Christmas tree, What's His Name rudely pushed him out of the presents. Not wanting to get on Santa's naughty list our rule-abiding kitty got into the Panzermobile for a trip into the Catosphere. Tootling around, he decided to make a stop at the Publishers Weekly site. Taking his frustrations out on the posts pile there, he dug around until he found one on Pearson's sale of its shares in publisher Penguin Random House

According to Ed Nawotka's post, Pearson has sold its last shares in Penguin Random House (PRH) to Bertelsmann for $675 million. Pearson has owned 25 percent of PRH since 2017 when it previously sold 22 percent of its shares to Bertelsmann. Bartelsmann no owns 100 percent of PRH and all its publishing assets. The post contains links to other information about PRH and it's future publishing plans.

Panzer says, "Bertelsmann is becoming a worldwide publishing behemoth."

Barnes & Noble to explore a sale - Chicago Business Journal

Panzer had hardly gotten into the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was buffeted by screaming and crying and gnashing of teeth. Following all the noise took our brave kitty boy to the Chicago Business Journal. There he found a post about the possible sale of Barnes and Noble.

According to the post by Gina Hall, Barnes and Noble is considering a sale of the company. Chairman Leonard Riggio has expressed interest in purchasing the company. It also appears someone or another company is buying up Barnes and Noble's stock. Barnes and Noble has put into place "a short-term shareholders rights plan" to try "to dilute an outsider's holdings."

Panzer says, "It sounds like a hostile takeover attempt to this little kitty."

Smashwords End of Year Sale Starts December 25

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Smashwords blog. Our very good kitty boy got a new Kindle PaperWhite for Christmas. He needs some new ebooks for it and found where to get them at the Smashwords blog.

I need a nap after all those books.

According to Mark Coker's blog post, Smashwords is having an end of the year sale. A large number of Smashwords authors are discounting their ebook prices from 25 percent to 100 percent (free) off. The sale runs from December 25 - January 1. At the Smashwords site on the left side there is a link to go to the ebooks included in the year end sale.

Panzer says, "Time to fill up my new ereader."

Barnes & Noble shares surge over buyout speculation - New York Post

Today, Panzer was enjoying a nice quiet trip in the Catosphere. Suddenly, the Panzermobile was shaken from windshield to rocket motors by cheering and clapping. Following the storm of noise took our kitty pilot to the New York Post site. There he discovered a post about Barnes and Noble.

According to the post by Carleton English, speculation about a possible buyout caused Barnes and Noble stock to rise to $7.75 a share. From a buyout by Amazon to one by an anonymous buyer, rumors about Barnes and Noble's sale have run rampant lately. This newest rumor has Barnes and Noble buying back all the shareholders' stock and going private. The company denies the rumor.

We'll only have cat books in my store.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... Let's see ... $7.75 for a share of Barnes and Noble stock. That's not much. Maybe, I can get Mom to buy a share for me. Then I could be part-owner of a bookstore."

Books World alarmed by Pearson's sale of stake in Penguin Random House - The Guardian

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere just minding his own cat business when he heard crying and gnashing of teeth coming from up ahead. Following all the noise took our kitty boy to The Guardian site. It didn't take any digging at all to find the news about Pearson's PRH sale is what everyone was so nervous about. Yesterday Panzer told you about Pearson's announcement.

Let's see what happens.

According to the post by Danuta Kean, many authors and agents are unsure about the consequences of Pearson's sale of their partial ownership in publisher Penguin Random House. The post speculates partner Bartelsmann will acquire 22 percent of Pearson's 47 percent and the remainder will be acquired by private equity. Bartelsmann will then be the majority stakeholder with 75 percent. Some authors and agents are worried Bartelsmann may be more interested in profit margins now than previously.

Panzer says, "Inquiring kitties want to know: What private equity will acquire that remaining 25 percent?"
