Mystery Writers of America celebrates 2024 Edgar Award Winners - Publishers Weekly

Repeat after me: Mystery writers are funny.

Today on his daily tootle in the Catosphere, Panzer visited the Publishers Weekly site. There in keeping with this week's mystery awards announcements, he discovered the Mystery Writers of America (MWA) announced the 2024 Edgar winners last night.

In addition to listing the winners in the fifteen categories, Lenny Picker's post has excerpts from the winners' acceptance speeches. These prove that writers who kill people (on paper) have a sense of humor.

Panzer says, "It looks like they had a lot of fun at the awards ceremony."

Note: This is a long post. Bring a cup of tea, a blueberry muffin and a chocolate chip cookie (biscuit) to snack on while you read.

Singing the Bouchercon Blues - The Rap Sheet

Panze had hardly laid his head down for his nap when crying and screaming coming from the Catosphere forced him up. Jumping in the Panzermobile, he followed all the noise to The Rap Sheet site. There he discovered news about Mystery Writers of America's (MWA) Bouchercon.

According to J. Kingston Pierce's post, Bouchercon 2021 in New Orleans, Louisiana, has been cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns. The post contains links to more information about the cancellation.

Boucher Con 2020 Online

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere, when he heard clapping and cheering coming from outside the Panzermobile. Following all the noise took our intrepid traveling kitty to the Bouchercon site.

Bouchercon is the Mystery Writers of America's annual convention. Just like many other writers' and publishers/booksellers' conventions this year, Bouchercon will be held online.

It's a mystery.

Unlike last weekend's Bloody Scotland (we had so much fun!), Bouchercon is not free to attend.  It is $55 to register for the October 16-17 convention. Registration ends October 4. The site doesn't provide much information about the scheduled speakers/authors or panels. There is a section for the Anthony Awards, where you can read the nominated short stories. There will be no refunds, so be sure you want to attend before signing up.

More Protests Against 'NYT' Bestseller Cuts - Publishers' Weekly

Panzer was just tootling around in the Catosphere today when his delicate kitty hearing was attacked by yelling and screaming. Following the cacophony took our poor kitty to the Publishers' Weekly (PW) site.  With a little digging there he found a news release about the New York Times (NYT) cuts to their bestseller lists. A few days ago Panzer told you when the cuts happened and authors' and publishers' reactions to them then.

A lot of humans are really angry.
According the release, now there is even more backlash against the New York Times (NYT) cuts of the mass market paperback bestseller list and the ebook bestseller list. Six authors' organizations, including the Mystery Writers of America, have joined forces to protest NYT's cuts to the lists. A total of 20,000 authors are members in the organizations issuing the statement.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... Do you think the New York Times cares if 20,000 authors complain? Now, if it was 20,000 subscribers, they might care. But 20,000 authors? I don't think so."

Note: This is a short news release. Bring a cup of tea to read today's selection. If you want to read Panzer's other post about the bestseller list cuts (this one has links to other posts), bring a thermos of tea and two muffins.

Announcing 2016's Edgar Nominees - Criminal Element

Panzer made a short trip into the Catosphere today. Our sure-footed kitty boy made a quick stop at the CriminalElement.com site. It took no digging at all to find the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Awards Nominees for 2016 announcement.

The nominees for Best Novel are:

The Stranger Vine - M.J. Carter
The Lady From Zagreb - Philip Kerr
Life or Death - Michael Robotham
Let Me Die in His Footsteps - Lori Roy
Canary - Duane Swierczynski
It doesn't matter to me at all.
Night Life - David C. Taylor

Panzer says, "No ... I didn't make the list in any category again this year. That's not surprising though. They still won't let a cat get membership in their mystery writers group. What do you expect? They're just a bunch of humans. So ... I'm too sophistiCATed for them."

Note: One cup of tea should be all you'll need for today's reading.

Dennis Lehane, one of Panzer's favorite mystery writers, has finally won an Edgar at this year's Edgar Awards Banquet!
