Powell's Employee Union Files Grievances Over Rehires - Publishers Weekly

 It's the weekend. So, when Panzer isn't cat napping, he's cleaning up the Panzermobile and the hangar. Today when he was sweeping out the hangar, he discovered a wadded up post on the floor. Flattening it out, he found it was a post from the Publishers Weekly site about Powell's Books bookstore.

 

According to the post by Ed Nawotka, the union for Powell's Books' employees is filing grievances against the bookstore on behalf of the employees. The union wants the bookstore to rehire employees for the same wages and positions they had before the pandemic closed the bookstore as promised by management. The bookstore says since it has been over 12 months since they closed, they're not bound by that promise. The bookstore wants former employees to apply for employment positions like everyone else.

There must be more to it.

Panzer says, "Umm ... A year is a long time to hold a position open for an employee ... and ... this says most of the employees they've hired are the former employees.  ... What's wrong? "

PRH Audio Debuts Voiceover Casting Platform, Ahab - Publishers Weekly

 Today as Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere, he heard clapping and cheering coming from outside the Panzermobile. Following all the noise took our adventuresome kitty boy to the Publishers Weekly site. There with no digging at all he found a post about the new Ahab platform.

 

Worldwide jobs for you.

According to the post by John Maher, Penguin Random House (PRH) has made additions to their inhouse Audio platform to allow outside access. The new platform is called Ahab. Ahab allows voiceover actors to list their profiles, audition for projects and accept employment from content creators for projects outside PRH. Ahab allows voiceover actors worldwide to post their profiles and content creators worldwide to post their project needs. There is a link and a video included in the post to learn more about Ahab.

 

Panzer says, "Hmm ... I wonder if Ahab would let this little kitty post a profile to do translations into cat-speak projects."

Publishers Brace for California Labor Law Changes - Publishers Weekly

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard shouting and crying outside the Panzermobile. Following all the noise, took our brave kitty boy to the Publishers Weekly site. There with a little digging in the posts he found one about a new labor law going into effect in California.

It's giving me a headache already.

According to the post by Jason Boog, California has a new labor law going into effect on January 1, 2020. The new law will re-classify many independent workers as employees. Included in the current independent workers categories are authors, editors and illustrators. If these workers are changed to employee status, publishers will be required to pay for unemployment coverage, minimum wages and other benefits. How to determine if an independent contractor will be re-classified and the new rules and exemptions appear to be confusing to some publishers.

Panzer says. "Hmm ... If publishers aren't very, very careful, this could turn into a big pile of kitty do-do for them."

Amazon surpasses Microsoft in number of Seattle region employees amid big growth plans across US - GeekWire

Today as Panzer entered the Catosphere he heard clapping and cheering outside. Following all the jocularity took our brave kitty boy to the GeekWire site. There with no digging at all he discovered a post about Amazon's employment plans.

MeWOW! 30,000 jobs!

According to GeekWire's Civic Editor Monica Nickelsburg, Amazon announced they now have 53,500 employees in the Seattle (Washington) area, 650,000 globally, and employee expansion plans. On September 17 the company is holding a "Career Day" with plans to hire 30,000 new employees. The "Career Day" will be held in Seattle as well as five other cities.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... According to the post, some of the jobs require specific talents."

Amazon expands San Diego Tech Hub and announces plans to create 300 high tech jobs - Press Release

Panzer's trip into the Catosphere today took him to the Amazon press room. With no digging at all our resourceful kitty found a post about Amazon's newest expansion plans.

According to the Amazon press release, the company will be expanding their San Diego Tech Hub. The expansion will create 300 new employment opportunities for San Diego, California, high tech workers. Amazon has already acquired a new 85,000 sq. ft. office space. There will be a grand opening ceremony on September 6. The post contains links to learn more about Amazon and the plans for the tech hub. The last portion of the post contains the usual history of Amazon.

What exactly is a Tech Hub?

Amazon Announces First Fulfillment Center in Alabama, Creating 1,500 Full-Time Jobs - Press Release

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard clapping and cheering outside. Following the jocularity took our kitty pilot to the Amazon press room. With no digging at all he discovered a post about Amazon's new Alabama fulfillment center.

The press release announces Amazon's newest fulfillment center is to be built in Bessemer, Alabama. As with all fulfillment centers employees will fill customer orders. The center will also make use of robotics to help the employees work more efficiently. The fulfillment center will employ 1,500 full-time employees. The employees will immediately be eligible for full company benefits. Benefits will include healthcare, 401k retirement plan, company stock, and maternity and parental leave. Is there a fulfillment center in all 50 states?

Amazon Announces Further Expansion in Oklahoma with Tulsa Fulfillment Center - Press Release

Yesterday really tired this little kitty out.

There was no post yesterday because Mom and What's His Name were replacing the baking element in the oven, whatever that is. Every time I tried to help What's His Name pushed me away. Of course, without my help it took an hour longer than they expected. By the time they finished it was dinner time and Mom wouldn't turn the computer on to record my hunting adventures. But ... She's all set for today, so here we got.

Panzer's trip into the Catosphere today took him to the Amazon press room. There with a little digging around he found a press release about Amazon's expansion in Oklahoma.

According to Amazon's press release, the company will be opening their second Oklahoma fulfillment center in Tulsa. The first fulfillment center will be located in South Oklahoma City. The new fulfillment center will employee 1500 employees. Full-time employee benefits will include maternity leave, parental leave, healthcare, 401(k), and company stock. The Career Choice program is also included in the benefit package. In the program Amazon pays 95 percent of the tuition for courses in in-demand fields. Included in the press release is a link to information about how to apply for employment at the fulfillment site.

Panzer says, "This little kitty wonders if Amazon is the largest U.S. employer yet."

Amazon Launches Latest Rooftop Solar System on 813,000 Square Foot Fulfillment Center in North Las Vegas - Press Release

Today as Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere he heard clapping and cheering. Following all the joyful noise took our adventuresome kitty to the Amazon Press Release site. There he found a post about Amazon's newest solar rooftop installation.

According to the press release, Amazon has installed a solar rooftop system at their North Las Vegas fulfillment center. The 1.1 megawatt system installation is the second the company has installed on their company sites in Nevada. This is the 17th rooftop solar installation in the U.S. in the past 14 months. Amazon's plans are to eventually be providing 100 percent of the company's energy consumption from it's own renewable energy company-wide. Panzer says, "Hmm ... Nevada seems to like all the jobs Amazon is bringing for employees there. ... And ... You know, Seattle, Washington, where the Amazon headquarters (HQ1) are located just put a $275 per employee tax on businesses ... And ... Amazon is the biggest employer there. ... And ... Amazon will be paying over $10 million per year because they have so many employees. ... So ... Maybe Nevada would like Amazon's HQ1 and all those jobs for employees, but with no per employee tax, of course. ... This little kitty is just wondering."

Amazon Continues Investment and Growth in Ohio with New West Jefferson Fulfillment Center - Press Release

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard laughing, clapping and cheering outside. Following all the jocularity took our inquisitive kitty boy to the Amazon newsroom. There with no digging at all he discovered news about Amazon's newest fulfillment center.

According to the press release, Amazon plans to open another fulfillment center in Ohio. Construction should be finished by the end of 2019. The 1,500 employees at the new center will bring Amazon's total Ohio employees to 7,500. Amazon has spent 2 billion dollars in Ohio since 2011 through infrastructure construction and employee salaries and benefits. There's a link included in the press release to learn about jobs at fulfillment centers and employee benefits.

Amazon thinks Ohio is a nice place to work.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... Maybe, Ohio would like Amazon's HQ2."

B&N to Save $40 Million Following New Layoffs - Publishers Weekly

Today, Panzer made a stop at the Publishers Weekly site. With just a little digging around our kitty boy found a post about Barnes and Noble's newest employee layoffs.

According to the post by Jim Milliot, Barnes and Noble is in the process of making an undisclosed number of employee layoffs. The layoffs are scheduled to be finished by February 16. While the company plans to pay $11 million in severance payments to the employees, it's estimated there will be a $40 million savings in payroll costs.There has been no announcement concerning what departments the layoffs have occurred in.

Why are your plans a secret?

Local governments won't say what they're offering Amazon - AP News

Today's trip took Panzer to the AP News (Associated Press) site. There with no digging at all he found a post about Amazon's second headquarters (HQ2).

According to the post by Josh Cornfield, Amazon has promised to choose the location for their second headquarters (HQ2) by the end of this year. By the 2017 deadline 238 proposals were received  from different states, cities and districts in North America. Each is hoping to get Amazon's promised 50,000 jobs. They're willing to give Amazon tax breaks, grants and incentives to get those jobs, but most are not willing to discuss they're individual offers. The post names three cities who were willing to disclose their offers. The other states,cities and districts either refused (for different reasons) to disclose anything or didn't bother to respond.

I've got an answer for any problem.

Panzer says, "Why do humans have all these big secrets from each other about what they're doing to woo Amazon? Everybody knows, nothing says I love you like a dead mouse on the pillow in the morning."

Amazon Expands with New Fulfillment Center in Michigan, Creating 1,000 New Full-Time Jobs - Press Release

Panzer made a quick trip to the Amazon press communications site. There our inquisitive kitty found a press release about Amazon's new Michigan fulfillment center.

According to Amazon's press release, the company has opened a 1 million sq. ft. fulfillment center warehouse in the Charter Township of Shelby, Michigan. Amazon will employ 1,000 local full-time employees. In addition to health and disability insurance, these employees also have access to retirement savings plans and company stock. Amazon will also pay up to 95 percent of an employee's tuition for in-demand degree training. The press release includes a link to information on how to apply for employment with Amazon.

It's a fun to try to guess, isn't it?

Panzer says, "Hmm ... This little kitty is wondering, if Detroit, Michigan, might be under consideration for Amazon's second North American headquarters (HQ2)? The press release does say Amazon already has a corporate office in Detroit."

Amazon Has More Than 50,000 Jobs Available and Expects to Hire Thousands of Employees at the Nation's Largest Job Fair - Press Release

Today, Panzer's trip into the Catosphere turned out to be a noisy one. Our traveling kitty had barely gotten into the Catosphere when his tender little kitty ears were assaulted by cheering and clapping and oohing and awing. Following all the hullabaloo took him to the Amazon site. There he found a press release about the Amazon Jobs Day.

According to the press release, the Amazon Jobs Day is August 2. The job fair will run from 8:00 am to Noon at 10 Amazon fulfillment centers across the U.S. With 10 hiring locations and 50,000 positions to fill, Amazon bills this as The Nation's Largest Job Fair. Tours of the fulfillment centers will be provided so potential employees can see what's entailed in working for Amazon. Qualified employment seekers will be offered jobs "on-the-spot." Locations of the participating fulfillment centers are included in the press release. Almost at the end of the press release is a link to apply online.

Do you think anybody will notice me?

Panzer says, "Shhh ... Don't tell anybody ... But this little kitty thinks he'll go to a fulfillment center just to see what they do in there."

Amazon to Open Fulfillment Center in Dallas Creating Hundreds of Full-Time Jobs | Business Wire

Panzer headed into the Catosphere looking for news for his friends. Our kitty reporter stopped in the Business Wire site.

Panzer found some news about Amazon for his friends in Texas.  Amazon is opening a new fulfillment center in Dallas, Texas. This brings Amazon's total to four centers in Texas. According to the post, the center will hire hundreds of full-time workers to process small purchases. As with all employees, the fulfillment center workers will have access to benefits such as education tuition help. There's a link to employment at fulfillment centers included in the post.

Panzer says, "Amazon sales must really be picking up to open a new center."
