Indigo's Q3 Earnings Hit by Postal Strike - Publishers Weekly

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard crying and gnashing of teeth. Following all the noise took our brave kitty boy to the Publishers Weekly site. There our brave kitty boy found a post about Indigo Books and Music.

According to the post by Ed Nawotka, the Canada Post strike hit Indigo Books and Music's third quarter hard. The strike impacted the company's deliveries and helped push revenue down 1.7 percent. Increased employee wages and store improvements also contributed to the revenue decline. On a brighter note CEO Heather Reisman said the company opened their first U.S. store and it was well received.

Investments Led to Higher Loss at Indigo - Publishers Weekly

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard crying and wailing. Following all the noise took our brave kitty to the Publishers Weekly site. There he found a post about Indigo Books and Music.
It's just a little loss.

According to Jim Milliot, Indigo Books and Music has announced their quarterly sales and revenue figures. While Indigo's same store sales for the quarter were up over last year, revenue was down. The revenue loss was due to store closures and renovation of others. Indigo expects revenue to increase going forward.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... Closing the under performing stores makes sense to this little kitty."

What Audiobooks.com's CEO Thinks Of The Industry's Double-Digit Growth - Forbes

Today, as Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere he decided to make a stop at the Forbes site. With just a little digging our intrepid kitty traveler found a post about audiobooks.

That's a big increase in sales.

Amazon Could Be as Big as Walmart In About Four Years or So - The Digital Reader

Panzer's trip into the Catosphere today took him to The Digital Reader site. With no digging at all he found a post about Amazon and Walmart.

The Digital Reader site owner Nate Hoffelder's post addresses the issue of Walmart's late entry into the online sales market. Although Walmart's overall sales size is three times bigger than Amazon, the post states Amazon could overtake Walmart in size in four years. The post includes a lot of information about online sales. End of the year financials comparing online sales revenue show Walmart's increased 44 percent verses Amazon's 31 percent. However, the percentages are misleading. Walmart had lower online sales to begin with, so a 44 percent increase is actually smaller than Amazon's 31 percent on larger beginning online sales. The post includes quotes from press releases. There are also links to financial reports, but Walmart's report wasn't secure and couldn't be viewed.
None of it makes sense to me.

Panzer says, "All those numbers and percentages gave this little kitty a headache and he couldn't make heads nor tails of what the post was trying to say."

Note: This is a huge post. Bring half a thermos of tea and six muffins for today's reading selection.

The first step was begun in February with layoffs to rein in employee costs. According to Mr. Parneros this will be a long term effort for the company. The post includes information about the strategic plan.

Indigo Reports Its Highest Quarter Revenue Ever - Publishers Weekly

Today, Panzer was just enjoying tootling around in the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was buffeted by cheering and clapping. Our brave kitty boy followed all the noise to the Publishers Weekly site. There with no digging at all he found a post about Indigo's quarterly sales and revenue figures.

According to the post by Jim Milliot, Canada's Indigo Books and Music announced the latest quarter's revenue was the highest ever. Sales revenue was up 8.2 percent compared to the same quarter in 2016. The largest sales gains were in general merchandise. Online sales were also up. The company still plans to open its first United States store in New Jersey. Company plans include an additional three or four United States stores.

They have cafes too don't they?
Panzer says, "Hmm ... This little kitty thinks Indigo Books and Music sounds a lot like Barnes and Noble without the Nook. So why is it working in Canada for them, but not here for Barnes and Noble?"

Barnes & Noble Reports Holiday Revenues Down 6.4 % - The Digital Reader

Panzer made a short trip into the Catosphere today. Our speedy little kitty pilot stopped in at The Digital Reader site. With a little digging he found a post about Barnes and Noble's holiday sales figures.

How can we help them?
According to The Digital Reader site owner Nate Hoffelder, Barnes and Noble announced in a press release that holiday sales revenue was down compared to last year's holiday revenue. It appears lower bricks and mortar store shoppers contributed to the 6.4 percent decline. Online sales also declined, but by only 4.5 percent. The company projects the next quarter sales will also be down.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... Obviously ...The restaurants with alcohol in the stores isn't working. Maybe ... Do a little work on the Nook? Or work on the Nook for PC app?"

Barnes and Noble's Sales Slump and It's Impact

24 days until Christmas
Panzer was awoken from his morning nap today by crying and wailing. Hopping into the Panzermobile took him first to the Publishers Weekly site and then to the Forbes site. Both have posts about Barnes and Noble's second quarter sales.

At his first stop our kitty boy learned that according to the Publishers Weekly post by Jim Milliot, Barnes and Noble's second quarter revenue/sales figures were reported. Revenue/sales were down nearly 8 percent compared to the same time period last year. Barnes and Noble attributed the book sales slump to lower sales in coloring books and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. There was also a decline in non-book sales like games and the Nook.

At his second stop he learned that according to the Forbes' post by Jonathan Ponciano, Barnes and Noble's second quarter sales slump also caused a 10 percent decline in their stock price as well. As the bookstore chain moves forward it does intend to place more emphasis on books and less on general merchandise.

Panzer says, "This little kitty thinks we need to help Barnes and Noble increase their holiday sales. ... Here's my plan ... Buy something from them. ... Hint: They do sell Cat Wisdom for humans ebooks and paperbacks."

Note: These combined posts are a long read. Bring a thermos of tea and a dozen muffins for today's reading selections.

B&N Eyes Revenue Growth - Publishers Weekly

Today, Panzer made a quick trip to the Publishers Weekly site. With just a little digging around our cute kitty boy found a post about Barnes and Noble's sales revenue. Panzer told you a couple of days ago about Barnes and Noble's decline in sales in their 2017 Fiscal Revenue Report.

Maybe make them cat friendly, too?
According to Jim Milliot's post, Barnes and Noble is planning to make some changes in the hopes of bringing about company revenue growth. CEO Demos Parneros advises the company is undertaking plans to make stores more customer friendly. While 2017 juvenile book sales were down as were adult coloring books among other sales declines, BN.com sales were up 3.9 percent. CEO Parneros advises other plans include reducing under performing book categories to make room for the more popular categories. Mr. Parneros doesn't expect an instantaneous turnaround and is instead looking at long term goals.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... BN.com sales are up. That's good."

Germany's Publishing Revenue Rises 1% in 2016 - Publishers Weekly

Today, Panzer made a trip to the Publishers Weekly site. There our traveling kitty found a post about the state of the German book market.

The figures don't look good to me.
According to Ed Nawotka's post, Germany's total 2016 book sales revenue figures are now available. The total 2016 revenue rose just 1 percent compared to 2015. The biggest increase for the period was in children's book sales at 9 percent. Ebook sales, however, were nearly even for the time period having only risen .1 percent. Book translations did show a rise for the period from 12.4 percent in 2015 to 13.6 in 2016. There are graphs and charts to illustrate the percentages in book publishing numbers, genres and revenues.

Panzer says, "Hmm ... Ebook sales were flat?"

Barnes and Noble Ousts CEO, Ron Boire - PW (Publishers' Weekly)

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he heard strange noises coming from the PW (Publishers' Weekly) site. Zipping over, he discovered some news about Barnes and Noble. Our inquisitive kitty does like to keep up to date on the goings on at Barnes and Noble. Their ebook selling site is the main outlet for his ebook sales.

According to a post by Rachel Deahl, Barnes and Noble announced the ousting (termination) of CEO Ron Boire. This comes on the heels of the disclosure that the company's June revenue showed a 3.1 percent decline with losses from the bn.com site and Nook sales. In the wake of Mr. Boire's departure, Barnes and Noble founder Len Riggio announced he will postpone his retirement until a replacement is found. Book publishers asked about the news were surprised and unhappy with the announcement.

I'll never understand humans.
Panzer says, "Let me see  ... Barnes and Noble announced a while back they were going to concentrate on building up their brick and mortar stores' restaurants and serve alcohol in them ... and ... cut back on the Nook. ... Hmmm ... Now Nook sales are down ... and ... the bn.com site (which sells ebooks for the Nook) sales are down. Coincidence? This kitty thinks not."

2015 U.S. Book Publishing Revenue Flat: Print Sales Rise as Ebook Sales Decline - Book Business

Panzer was just tootling around in the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was buffeted and shaken by the sounds of crying and wailing. Our big brave kitty boy followed all the moaning to the Book Business site. There he found the source was a post about declining ebook sales.

Don't worry. It's just a craze.
According to the post by Ellen Harvey quoting from the Association of American Publishers' annual report, ebook sales comparing 2014 and 2015 are down. While that was happening, print book sales increased for the same time span. So what happened? For one thing, adult coloring books happened. Between the 2014 and 2015 time span is when the adult coloring book craze took off. Adult coloring books have to be printed books, so a jump in print book sales. The post includes charts  covering sales revenue and volume as well as genre breakdowns.

Panzer says, "So ... Adult coloring books are responsible for the turn around in print book sales. Humans are such an interesting species."

Note: This is a long post. Bring a glass of milk and two muffins for today's reading selection.
