How many jobs are they bringing to the data centers?

According to Emma Roth's post, Anthropic announced their plan's to build two new data centers.

Amazon announces new Kindle Scribes, including one with color screen - The Verge

Always feed the kitty first.

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was suddenly buffeted by the sounds of clapping and cheering. Following all the hoopla took our brave kitty boy to The Verge site. There he discovered a post about Amazon Kindle Scribes was causing all the noise.

 

According to Andrew Liszewski's post, Amazon will have the new Kindle Scribes for sale over the next few months. The post covers the Scribe's features and uses. The new models will have a starting price of $429.99. There's a link to more information included in the post.

Amazon killing a feature that let you download and backup Kindle books - The Verge

Panzer stopped in at The Verge site today. There with a little digging in the posts our intrepid kitty traveler found one about an Amazon change to purchasing and downloading ebooks.

 

According to a post by Andrew Liszewski, Amazon is doing away with their feature to download and backup your ebook purchases. You'll need to get your wi-fi set up very soon.

Spotify price is reportedly going up again - The Verge

Another increase?

Today Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was buffeted by booing and hissing outside. Following all the noise, took our brave kitty boy to The Verge site.There he found a post about Spotify.

 

The post by Chris Welch quotes from a report by Bloomberg that Spotify will be increasing their prices beginning the end of April in certain countries. The increase will be for Spotify's audiobook listeners.

OpenAI partners with Arizona State University to use ChatGPT in classrooms - The Verge

Rules change whenever you want.

On today's trip into the Catosphere Panzer stopped in at The Verge site. There with a little digging in the posts he found one about ChatGPT.

According to Emilia David's post, Arizona State University (ASU) will now use ChatGPT Enterprise for student and faculty projects.  There's a link in the post to the original press release about ASU and OpenAI's agreement.

Panzer says, "Hey wait a minute! This little kitty thought schools were saying students could not use ChatGPT. When did that change?"

Bing is now the default search for ChatGPT - The Verge

The post by Tom Warren says effective May 23 Microsoft Bing became ChatGPT Plus' default search engine. Plus is the paid version of ChatGPT. The free version will get a plug-in "soon" to allow the same Bing functionality.

Spotify tries to win indie authors by cutting audiobook fees - The Verge

Today, Panzer made a trip to The Verge site. There our inquisitive kitty boy found a post about Spotify and Findaway Voices. You may remember Panzer told you when Spotify bought Findaway last year.

 

Just wondering.

According to the post by Amrita Khalid, Findaway has announced it will no longer charge a distribution fee to indie authors who use Finaway Voices to upload their audiobooks to Spotify and make sales there. The post includes a link to the original Findaway announcement.

OpenAI's CEO confirms the company isn't training GPT- and 'won't for some time' - The Verge

Interesting information.

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he decided to make a stop at The Verge site. With a little digging in the posts there he found one about OpenAI's GPT-5.

 

According to James Vincent's post, CEO Sam Altman says OpenAI isn't working on training GPT-5. The post includes a 3 minute YouTube video of CEO Altman. After the video James Vincent explains what a version number is (GPT-4 vs. GPT-5) and what it isn't.

Google's AI chatbot Bard makes factual error in first demo - The Verge

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to The Verge site. There our adventuresome little kitty boy discovered a post about Google's new chatbot Bard.

 

I like ChatGPT. He makes me laugh.

According to James Vincent's post, chatbot Bard made a little mistake in his first demonstration of his intellectual abilities. It turns out that just like ChatGPT, Bard doesn't always know what he's talking about. It's been posted at the ChatGPT site that the bot doesn't always give the right answer and, if you notice it, to let the humans there know. So, now Google needs to post the same disclaimer, because, obviously, Bard doesn't always give the right answer either.

 

Panzer says, "Hmm ... All this little kitty can say is that must have been really embarrassing for Google."

Spotify comes for audiobooks - The Verge

Today, Panzer made a trip to The Verge site. There with a little digging in the posts he found one about Spotify's acquisition of Findaway. Panzer told you about the proposed acquisition in November 2021.

 According to the post by Ariel Shapiro, at an investors meeting earlier this month Spotify CEO Daniel Ek spoke about the acquisition of Findaway. CEO Ek discussed plans for free audiobooks and audiobooks with ads. The post includes links to other information about the acquisition.

Maybe I won't use Findaway.

Windows 10 Basics: How to pause updates - The Verge

Don't put it out until it's fixed.

Today Panzer found an interesting post over at The Verge site. While the post doesn't have anything to do with publishing, it does address one of Panzer's problems with Windows 10.

In previous versions of Windows you could have Windows ask you before it did an update or you could stop updates. Panzer couldn't find any option for either of these in Windows 10 until he found this post by Allya Chaudhry.

Turns out while there is no longer an option to have Windows ask first before an update or stop the updates, there is an option to pause update installs. Unfortunately, it's only for a week and then you need to go back in and pause it again, but at least you're spared those huge updates that won't let you turn off the computer or reduce you computer to crawl-speed or worst of all change your computer into a doorstop because there's something wrong with the update.

Amazon is reopening its French warehouses after COVID-19 labor dispute - The Verge

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to The Verge site. There our traveling kitty pilot found a post about Amazon's French warehouses. Last week Panzer told you about Amazon closing the company's French fulfillment centers in April.

All humans want is more money.

According The Verge's Chaim Gartenberg's post, Amazon is reopening the company's six French warehouses. The company will open the fulfillment centers slowly. There will be staggered shifts for the employees and increased pay.

Panzer says, "Well ... Now people there will get their orders faster, since Amazon won't be shipping from fulfillment centers outside France anymore."

It looks like Google's going to launch a podcast app - The Verge

Panzer's trip into the Catosphere today took him to The Verge site. It took a little digging for our inquisitive kitty to find a post about Google's podcast app.

In the post at The Verge Shoshana Wodinsky explains why it's likely Google will launch a podcast app. The post speculates the app will actually be an extension of the existing Google Search on Android. There are several links to other sites for information on Google Search and podcast information included in the post. If you follow the links, you get a better understanding of Google's plans.

RIP Jerry Pournelle, the first author to write a novel on a computer - The Verge

Today, Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he stopped in at The Verge site.

In a post by Andrew Liptak, Panzer learned that one of his favorite science fiction authors Jerry Pournelle has passed away. Jerry Pournelle was the first author to write a novel on a computer using the first word processing program, Electric Pencil. With collaborator Larry Niven, he wrote the novel The Mote in God's Eye. Dr. Pournelle also worked on some of the earliest NASA space flights.

Microsoft Unveils Digital Bookstore - Publishers' Weekly

Today, Panzer was making a leisurely trip around the Catosphere when the Panzermobile was buffeted by laughing and guffawing. Following all the jocularity, took our inquisitive kitty to the Publishers' Weekly (PW) site. There he discovered a post about Microsoft.

According to Calvin Reid's post, Microsoft has plans to open a retail digital bookstore. Quoting from a post at the Good E-Reader site, Mr. Reid says Microsoft will have hundreds of thousands (no specific number anywhere) of ebooks available. Microsoft's April upgrade to the Windows 10 Edge browser will make it easier to read ebooks on your computer, laptop or tablet. The post includes a link to the quoted Good E-Reader post and one to an earlier The Verge post.

Amazon is expanding its retail operation to 100 pop-up stores around the US - The Verge

A kiosk? About the size of a litter box..

Today, Panzer's trip into the Catosphere took him to The Verge site. There our big bad kitty found a post about Amazon's newest retail sales plans.

In a post by Nick Statt Panzer learned Amazon plans to open 100 pop-up stores (kiosks) in shopping malls across the U.S. The pop-ups will sell electronic devises, including Kindles and other Amazon products. Shoppers will also be able to get information about Amazon services such as Prime and Originals. However, no books will be sold there.

Panzer says, "Hmmm ... Seems like stuff I could just buy online."
