European Publishers Say the EU is Giving In to AI - Publishers Daily

I'm getting a headache from all the AI chaos.

Panzer found this news release at the Publishers Daily site.

 

According to the release, organizations representing millions of European creatives have complained to the European Commission about the European Union AI Act. The post includes a link to more information about the organizations complaints.

Amazon Kindle's new feature uses AI to generate recaps for books in a series - TechCrunch

Nobody asked me.

Panzer made a quick trip to the TechCrunch site today. There with a little digging in the posts he found one about Amazon's new book recaps.

 

 According to Aisha Malik's post, Amazon is now using AI to generate recaps of books for Kindle users.

Publishers See Mixed Messages in Paris AI Summit - Publishers Weekly

Why did they expect something different?

Today, Panzer found some news at the Publishers Weekly site about the Paris AI Summit. Yesterday, he told you about the International Publishers Association signing on the statement before the Summit.

  

Jim Milliot's post quotes Maria Pallante CEO of the Association of American Publishers. The Summit did not address the issue of the unauthorized use of copyrighted material.

IPA Joines an International Statement on the Paris AI Summit - Publishing Perspectives

I wonder what they'll decide to do this time.

Panzer found this post at the Publishing Perspectives site. This is about an international AI summit to be held in Paris. The IPA mentioned in the post title is the International Publishers Association.

 

The post by Porter Anderson explains the statement which was signed by 38 of the organizations who will be present at the Summit. The post includes the statement.

Today everywhere Panzer went he found posts about the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) organization and it's recently published stand on AI. Part of the problem NaNoWriMo caused was by the words and phrases used and part of it was accepting as a sponsor a company that uses a chatbot. AI heats up as OpenAI, Google and Mistral release new models - The Guardian

No more interruptions. It's nap time.

Panzer didn't make it home from his trip to Publishers Weekly before another storm of clapping and cheering got him on a new adventure quest. This time he found himself led to The Guardian site. With no digging in the posts at all he found one about AI (Artificial Intelligence) was the cause of all the jubilation.

Alex Hern says in his post that during a twelve hour period OpenAI announced GPT-4 Turbo's release, Google announced Gemini Pro 1.5's release and Mistral announced Mixtral 8x22B's release. The post goes in,to more details about the releases and reactions to them. It's a long-medium length post, so there's a lot more information.

Ghost in the Machine: Artificial Intelligence and the Business of Writing - Writer Unboxed

I don't use AI generated stories, but some authors do.

Panzer found an interesting post about AI generated materials at the Writer Unboxed site.

 

Emilie-Noelle Provost's post begins with an author who submitted an AI written novel, but claimed it as their own. A further check disclosed this author had other already published AI generated novels which the author also claimed to have written. The post then deals with some of the possible ways authors could petition to stop this practice. The post also includes helpful links.

AI Research by Meta: Seamless Communication

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere today when the Panzermobile was shaken by clapping and ooohing and ahhing outside. Following all the noise, our brave kitty boy discovered it was coming from the Meta site.

It looks like a big step forward.

There he found Meta has developed AI research models which can translate across several languages. The translations also include "expressive" language to make it sound more natural. The post includes translation samples, downloads and links.

Panzer says, "This little kitty thinks these translations would work for audiobooks too."

Artificial Intelligence and Copyright: SFWA's Comments to the US Copyright Office - Writer Beware(R)

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Writer Beware (R) site. There our traveling kitty pilot found a post about Artificial Intelligence-generated (AI-generated) written material.

 

There's a lot of AI written garbage.

The post contains a letter written to the US Copyright Office by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA). The letter was sent in response to the Copyright Office's request for comments about AI issues with "creating" material. The SFWA believes AI-generated work should be uncopyrightable. The letter lists the reasons why from a writer's point of view. Then, if at a point in the future the Copyright Office does decide to allow AI work copyright status, the SFWA lists four criteria which should be met.

AI=Created Art Isn't Copyrightable, Judge Says in Ruling That Could Give Studios Pause - The Hollywood Reporter

 As Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere today, the Panzermobile was shaken by clapping coming from outside. Following all the hoopla, took our little kitty pilot to The Hollywood Reporter site. There he found a post about AI-generated artwork and copyright.

 

I can't copyright my books. I'm a cat.

According to Winston Cho's post, a federal judge ruled that AI-created artwork can't be granted a copyright. The judge's reasoning is based on the fact a copyright can only be granted to human created artwork. The lawsuit was before the judge because the U.S. Copyright Office refused to grant a copyright for a piece of artwork generated by an AI not a human.

 

 Panzer says, "If it's true for AI-generated artwork, it's true for AI-generated books. No copyright for either."

Google Updates Product Ratings Policies On Automated AI Content - Search Engine Journal

Who is next to ban AI reviews?

Today, Panzer made a stop at the Search Engine Journal site. There with a little digging in the posts he found one about Google's new change to the company product rating policy.

According to the post by Kristi Hines, Google will not accept AI generated product reviews. If a customer sees what they believe is AI generated content, it should be marked as spam. Google will also be doing their searches through reviews to find AI content and remove it. There will be penalties for companies caught using AI generated reviews.

Panzer says, "There are several businesses that promise AI generated reviews for companies' products."

Illustration Agencies Introduce New AI-Specific Contract Clause - Publishers Weekly

At the Publishers Weekly site Panzer found a news release about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and illustrators.

The Authors Guild drafted a letter to the company leaders in generative AI. The letter addresses the Authors Guild's areas of concern in the use of AI in the writing environment.

"Shadow libraries" are at the heart of the mounting copyright lawsuit against OpenAI - Quartz

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Quartz site. There our intrepid traveling kitty boy found a post about another lawsuit against OpenAI.

It's called transparency.

Michelle Cheng's post explains about OpenAI using "shadow libraries" to teach Artificial Intelligence to write like humans. "Shadow libraries" and their connections with the use of copyrighted material are explained.

Panzer says, "This little kitty thinks, if OpenAI would just tell where they got all the books used to teach AI instead of keeping it a secret, they wouldn't be getting sued to find out the answer."

According to a post by Michael Capobianco, the U.S. Copyright Office has determined what it will consider copyrightable in human and AI-generated material. It doesn't appear to bode well for AI-generated books. The post includes a link to the U.S. Copyright Office.
