According to Dorys Kit's post, Brandon Sanderson's 'Cosmere' universe books are destined for TV. The post includes information on the rights agreement and descriptions of the universe books.

At the Writer Beware (R) site Panzer found this post about the controversy surrounding the contracts for short stories being accepted for publication by the new owners of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Asimov's Science Fiction, Analog Science Fiction and Fact, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

 

In the post Victoria Strauss explains author complaints about the owner group's new contracts and the lack of negotiation on disputed contract clauses. Professional writers groups are also involved in the negotiations to change the contracts as well. The post includes links to more information about the sale.

Contract Critique: Dashtoon - Writer Beware (R)

I get a headache and have to lay down when I get confused.

Today, Panzer made a trip to the Writer Beware (R) site. There with just a tiny bit of digging in the posts our traveling kitty pilot found one about Dashtoons.

According to Victoria Strauss' post, Dashtoon is a company which contracts for the rights to materials to sell on their platform. The material may be any type of written works or already prepared web comics. In the post she does an examination of the company's two contracts: the exclusive contract and the non-exclusive contact.

Panzer found an interesting post about AI generated materials at the Writer Unboxed site.

 

Emilie-Noelle Provost's post begins with an author who submitted an AI written novel, but claimed it as their own. A further check disclosed this author had other already published AI generated novels which the author also claimed to have written. The post then deals with some of the possible ways authors could petition to stop this practice. The post also includes helpful links.

Outrage Over New Terms of Use at Findaway Voices Forces Change - Writer Beware(R)

You need to be very careful now.

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Writer Beware (R) site. With hardly any digging at all in the posts there our diligent kitty boy found one about Findaway Voices and owner Spotify. This is a follow-up post about an earlier problem with writers/creators losing right to stop AI from "learning" their works through Findaway Voices' Terms of Use.

 

In her post Victoria Strauss does a deep dive into the Findaway Voices' Terms of Use (TOU). She explains different sections of TOU which have been changed and why. There are also details about areas which are still a little confusing and could be better clarified. The post includes links to other earlier posts and to information about Findaway Voices.

Findaway Voices, Machine Learning, and the New Frontier - Writer Beware

Today, Panzer made a stop at the Writer Beware site. There he found a post about Findaway Voices and Apple that had him shaking his kitty head in disbelief.

 

It's hidden in the contract? Not good.

According to Victoria Strauss' post, Findaway Voices has had a clause hidden in their contract that users had no knowledge of. When you sign a contract with Findaway you're giving them the right to give your audio book to Apple for machine learning purposes. Apparently, this has been part of the contract since 2019. There are several links included in the post to other information.

Contest Alert: Bardsy's "The Short and Long of It" NaNoWriMo Prep Contest - Writer Beware

 Panzer had just settled down for his evening nap when he heard booing and hissing coming from the Catosphere. Jumping into the Panzermobile he headed out. The trail of angst lead him to the Writer Beware site. There he found a Contest Alert post.

 

The post by Victoria Strauss discusses the Bardsy "The Short and Long of it" NaNoWriMo Prep Contest. According to the post authors need to read the contest rules very carefully.  Some of the rules are very unfair to authors. For one, just by entering the contest authors are giving Bardsy first publication rights. For another, Bardsy keeps the rights in perpetuity. The post points out other problems with the rules as well and explains why they are bad for authors.

My job is done for the day.

Sue Grafton Sold Out - The Rap Sheet

 Panzer was shaken from his afternoon nap by booing and hissing coming from the Catosphere. Hopping in the Panzermobile, our intrepid kitty followed all the ballyhoo to The Rap Sheet site. There he discovered some news about Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone was causing all the angst.

Money over wishes.

According to a post by Linda L. Richards, the rights to the Kinsey Millhone books have been granted to A&E . Sue Grafton had said she never wanted the Kinsey novels to be sold to Hollywood. She was fierce about her wishes. She had even gone so far as to make her children swear to never go against her wishes. Apparently, her husband didn't agree with her wishes because he's the one who signed the contract.

Panzer says, "NOOOOO!"

Michael Bracken's post brings up special things writers need to do. These are things to help their family members take care of the writing business and their royalty payments, the rights to their work, their obituary, and other business duties. This is a serious post.
