Markets and Jobs for Writers - The Practicing Writer

 Panzer stopped in at The Practicing Writer site where he found a post about opportunities for writers
 
The post by Erika Dreifus lists markets and jobs which don't charge any fees for submissions or applications. The list includes markets for short fiction and poetry and competitions, fellowships and jobs for writers. Some do have submission restrictions.
 
Check submission end dates too.

Kensington CozyClub Mini-Con October 2022 - Criminal Element

Panzer made a quick trip to the Criminal Element site today. With a little digging in the posts our illustrious kitty boy found one about publisher Kensington's October cozy author mini-con.

Doreen Sheridon's post includes information about the authors who attended the mini-con and all the activities there. One of the activities was called Speed Dating. Only Kensington cozy mystery authors participated. Photos of the authors are included.

102 Calls for Submissions in December 2022 - Paying Markets - Publishing ... and Other Forms of Insanity

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Publishing ... and Other Forms of Insanity site. There he found a post about the publication sites accepting submissions in December.

Today, Panzer stopped in at the Amazon Company News site. With a little digging there our inquisitive kitty boy found a post from CEO Andy Jazzy.
 
What is the economy?
The post explains the recent "role eliminations" in Amazon's workforce. CEO Andy Jazzy says the reductions were necessitated by the economy. He also says the reductions will continue into 2023.
 
Panzer says, "Hmm ... Everybody is laying off employees."

Vellum 3.4 publishing software is out: $200+ but worth it - TeleRead

Today, Panzer made a trip to the TeleRead site. There he found a post about Vellum software.

Ebook distribution used to be easy.
According to David Rothman's post, the new Vellum 3.4 is now available. In his review Vellum is his choice for making epub versions of his books. While Vellum is for Macs only, he does include some software recommendations for the Windows operating system. The post includes links to all the recommended software products.

Panzer says, "We don't have a Mac so this little kitty is glad he included software for Windows too."

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to The Idea Logical Company site. There with a little digging in the posts he found one about the Penguin Random House and Simon and Schuster merger failure. Panzer told you about the court case as it unfolded.

Mike Shatzkin gives an in-depth analysis of what he believes will be the outcome of the court decision to stop the Penguin Random House (PRH) merger with Simon and Schuster (S&S). He presents his reasoning for why there will continue to be a big five in the publishing industry.

Panzer says, "Everything he presents makes sense as long as the court decision is upheld on appeal. (If there is an appeal.)"

Amazon Printing Press and Pricing Scams: What Authors Need to Know - Kindleprenuer

This is going to be a short post today. Our wi fi has been on and off all day, so we don't know how much time we've got to get this uploaded.

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Kindleprenuer site. There our intrepid kitty traveler found a post about scams using authors' stolen books being run on Amazon.
 
They can't fix our wi fi until tomorrow.
According to Jason Hamilton's post, people are stealing authors' books by printing bad quality books and then selling them on Amazon as either the books' publisher or the authors. The post also explains the repercussions for the authors from this activity. A second scam also using Amazon is discussed in the post as well.

Today is the beginning of a three day holiday weekend for Veterans Day in the U.S., so Panzer went out to find some entertainment for you.
 
It is a holiday for me.
Our traveling kitty boy stopped in at the Paperback Writer site where he found a Philip Marlowe old radio mystery episode in the Crime Cafe. It's titled "The Old Acquaintance" and is 31 minutes long including the intro by site owner Debbi Mack. It's free to listen to.

 In case you missed The BookFest, Panzer found the videos of the panels are available on YouTube.

BookFest was October 22 and 23. Although the October 22 event was designated as The Reader day and October 23 was designated The Writer day, the panels on either day were appropriate for either readers or writers.

In Written Opinion, Judge Florence Pan Delivers Knockout Blow to PRH, S&S Merger - Publishers Weekly

Today, over at the Publishers Weekly site Panzer found a post about the judge's decision against the merger of Penguin Random House (PRH) and Simon and Schuster (S&S).

Panzer says, Nap time.

The post by Andrew Albanese lists the major points from Judge Pan's written opinion which was released yesterday. The judge listed the arguments of the Department of Justice's (DOJ) case which she used in making her decision against the merger. She also listed the arguments of the publisher's lawyers which she found not credible.

Panzer says, "Judge Pan put a lot of effort into her decision."

Publishing Scotland Opens Translation Fund for International Publishers - Publishing Perspectives

Panzer was tootling around in the Catosphere when he decided to stop in at the Publishing Perspective site. There with a little digging in the posts our intrepid kitty boy found one about grants for international publishers translating Scottish novels.
 
According to Porter Anderson's post, Publishing Scotland is offering grant funding for the translation of Scottish authors' novels. The funding is open to publishers located outside the U.K. Links to previous grant winners and the application form are included in the post.

AI-generated images to be sold as stock photos through Shutterstock - digitaltrends

Today, Panzer made a stop at the digitaltrends site. There he found a post about AI artwork. AI has been in the news for the last few weeks. Panzer told you when Getty Images and other stock photo sites banned the sale of the AI artwork because of copyright fears.

According to Caleb Clark's post, Shutterstock will soon begin selling it's own AI-generated artwork. The company believes it has found a way around the copyright and legality issues.The post includes a link to another site with more information.
